For our newest contest, we're giving away two Blu-Ray copies of Afflicted, my favorite horror film of the year so far. Written and directed by newcomers Derek Lee and Clif Prowse, this found footage indie horror manages to avoid all the awful subgenre stereotypes that make movies like Chernobyl Diaries an unappetizing waste. Imagine Chronicle meets skin-crawling, modern terror - and that's exactly where I'm leaving it.
The worst part is, with a semi-capable script and a more focused delivery, Michael Bay could have had a pretty stellar Transformers movie. Instead, he ends up with yet another Bay-splosion filled bit of clunky chaos.
I feel like it was just yesterday that I was talking to Leigh Whannell about Insidious: Chapter 3 at SXSW, when all we knew was that Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne weren't going to return, but since then the project has received nothing but good news. First it was announced that directorial duties would stay in house with Leigh Whannell, then future Jem and the Holograms star Stefanie Scott joined the cast, and today brings more casting news in the way of a leading man.
Animal has enough carnage to appease more forgiving horror fans, but despite a quick pace and brutal kills, it's repetition that truly kills this beast.
Yes, can you believe it? Marvel, one of the biggest Hollywood hype machines at the moment, will reveal a first look at their newest superhero property during the biggest convention of comic book fans and cinema junkies - SURPRISE! The Marvel panel is the event to beat every year, and it looks like everyone else is going to have their work cut out for them yet again. If you remember back to SDCC 2013, a short teaser for the film was shown, but since filming hadn't even started yet, it turned out to be nothing but an Ultron confirmation.
Since Rampage, Uwe Boll has gone on to direct a string of underwhelming efforts, but a new trailer released today suggests the auteur is ready to re-visit his most successful material for another go at corruption, class warfare, and governmental gripes. Yes, Rampage: Capital Punishment brings back Brendan Fletcher as the disgruntled Bill Williamson, suiting up once again to unite the typically unheard voices for a bit of rebellious outreaching.
The Marvel universe recently got a whole lot darker when they announced that Scott Derrickson would be directing the upcoming Doctor Strange film, but before he takes a crack at that blockbuster, he'll be looking to scare viewers senseless once again with one of the summer's most talked about horror films — Deliver Us From Evil. Based on real-life NYPD sergeant Ralph Sarchie's personal accounts, Derrickson brings to life a true story about possessions, terrors, and evil forces that unfolded in the Bronx in New York City. From the footage we've seen, all signs point to a spookily satanic "true story" that shows a completely hidden side of the Big Apple, but ever since Derrickson was named director, we knew Deliver Us From Evil was in good hands.
Ever since I bought the original Dead Rising when the very first wave of XBOX 360 consoles hit the streets, I knew the incredibly cinematic game was perfect for a big-screen adaptation. Honestly, I'm surprised it took a studio this long to develop the content for film, especially with the popularity of zombie culture in recent years, but Legendary has finally decided to pull the trigger on this now three-game franchise. So, who will play photojournalist Frank West? Or Motocross superstar Chuck Greene? Or mechanic Nick Ramos? Well, the answer might be a little surprising...
The Joy Ride movies aren't as much a franchise as they are one luckily decent Paul Walker thriller followed by whatever the hell Joy Ride: Dead Ahead is, but with every intention of keeping the rubber burning, Sharktopus director Declan O'Brien was brought in to create a second sequel so good, the competition would be forced to eat nothing but dust.
