When the credits rolled on the first season of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead series, fans were eager to continue Clementine’s interactive adventure there and then. With the studio also developing the fairy tale-inspired The Wolf Among Us, many believed the next chapter wouldn’t grace our screens until early 2014. Fear not, though, as a recent Steam listing slated The Walking Dead: Season 2 for release on December 17th.
Early adopters of Battlefield 4 on PlayStation 4 and PC will be pleased to know that DICE is set to release a software update later today aimed to address the game's ongoing issues. The patch itself is primarily designed to rectify the one-hit kill bug, which has resulted in players dying from a single, well-placed shot, all the while addressing general stability and other improvements. The fix itself has been live from 5am EST (10am GMT) on PC, while PS4 users can expect the update sometime before the afternoon Eastern Time.
Microsoft is currently planning a large-scale update for its three primary multimedia platforms, according to a report from tech analyst website ZDNet. Codenamed Threshold, a tip of the hat to Bungie's Halo universe, the alleged update is set to bring Windows OS, Windows Mobile and the Xbox One under one, unified operating system. Mind you, it’s worth keeping in mind that this doesn't signify the all-new iteration of Windows operating system.
With the PlayStation 4 out in the public ether and breaking records, gamers across the country are already anticipating what the future holds for Sony’s new console. And perhaps one of the most anticipated features of the next-gen system is the Gaikai-powered streaming service, which is currently on track to launch in North America within Q3 of 2014, according to sources.
According to figures published by Gfk Chart-Track, the PlayStation 4 sold 250,000 units in the United Kingdom over the course of the weekend, which positions Sony’s next-gen system as the fastest-selling console launch in the country’s gaming history. The record, which was previously held by the PSP since 2005, emulates the Xbox One’s retail performance, with Microsoft’s latest hardware selling 150,000 units in comparison.
Sony Pictures has sparked a flurry of speculation by registering domains for The Last Of Us —specifically TheLastofusMovie.net and TheLasTofus-Movie.com — hinting that a potential feature film could be on the cards. Naughty Dog’s bold, critically-adorned title set a series of records upon release, selling 3.4 million units within the space of three weeks.
A new Tales game is imminent, it seems, after Namco Bandai pointed gamers in the direction of a website which teases a future announcement for the series. Entitled ‘Next Tales of…’ the website illustrates the legacy of the studio’s long-running franchise —with particular nods to Tales of Destiny and Tales of Phantasia— while hinting towards the latest installment.
Virtual reality: it’s all the craze at the moment. What was once an overpriced gimmick of the early 90s has positioned itself as the next big thing and one that’s garnered the support of the industry’s big players. With Oculus and Sony both manufacturing their own device, it’s now understood that Valve is also working to develop its own line of virtual reality headsets, which it plans to debut at the Steam Dev Days event on January 15th.
Though it remains an Xbox exclusive in the console space —Respawn’s first-person shooter will also launch next year on PC— EA has hinted at future iterations of Titanfall appearing across a wide variety of platforms; including PlayStation 4. Speaking during an investor call at the Global Technology Conference last night, Blake Jorgensen, chief financial officer for EA, spoke about his high hopes for the eye-catching intellectual property.
With that in mind, the question must then be asked: is the open-world genre careering along a similar trajectory that was recently mapped out by first person shooters; the familiar boom that precedes the inevitable fatigue?
