War Witch Review

Though at this year’s Academy Awards foreign language favourite (and ultimate winner) Amour overshadowed many of the other contenders, the slate proved to be both accessible and ultimately strong, not to mention thoroughly distinctive. Canada’s official entry War Witch (interestingly from a Vietnamese/Quebecois director named Kim Nguyen and set in Africa) like the others, never had much of a chance to take home the prize, but still proves to be a unique if sometimes ideologically flawed film.

Kon-Tiki Review

A nominee for Best Foreign Language Picture at this year’s Oscars, Norwegian import Kon-Tiki chronicles the journey of adventurer Thor Heyerdahl and his incredible journey some 5,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Polynesia on a balsa wood raft. Though comparisons will inevitably be drawn between this film and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, a fellow Oscar nominee, they are very different beasts and are both films deserving of attention.

The Walking Dead Review: “When The Dead Come Knocking” (Season 3, Episode 7)

With its newfound brisk pace, The Walking Dead is not slowing by even a fraction. If anything, “When the Dead Come Knocking”, the lead-up to the mid-season finale, proved three things. One, that a setup episode doesn’t have to be limp, two, that this show has truly moved on to threats greater than the teeming masses of the undead and three, that the showrunners have finally mastered tension, pacing and dread at a more primeval level that ever before.

The Walking Dead Review: “Hounded” (Season 3, Episode 6)

Though it may have been masked on the surface, episode four’s intriguing cliffhanger ending, which found a deranged and blood-covered Rick answering a ringing phone after tracking down the site of his wife’s tragic demise, is rather reminiscent of the series as a whole.

The Walking Dead Review: “Say The Word” (Season 3, Episode 5)

The lives of the survivors (and viewers) of AMC’s hit show were rattled alike with last week’s episode “Killer Within” which gruesomely and tragically dispatched two prominent cast members and as showcased this week, the potential of another. So far hitting with a force more akin to a string of season finales, this return to the apocalyptic world of The Walking Dead is showing no signs of letting up and is easily poising itself to be the best season yet.

Ample blood has already been spilled this season of The Walking Dead and most unnervingly, not just of the undead variety. With this season’s tagline “fight the dead, fear the living,” AMC certainly appears to be sticking to its proverbial (and literal) guns.
