A Field In England Review
Ben Wheatley is a man who defies both critics and audiences' frustrating habit of the need to pigeonhole a director into one definable genre or style. When you expect him to settle down into making a particular sort of film, he throws a curve ball. A Field in England is exactly that kind of curveball. The double whammy of Sightseers and Kill List seemed to be cut from the same cloth, both in terms of plot and sensibility, and the trailer and marketing for A Field in England suggests a continuation of that. While Wheatley retains the brooding air of palpable unease and tension, the film is a surprising and bold new step for the director.

10 Great Performances From 2013 That Are Unlikely To Receive Oscar Recognition
This has been one of the best awards seasons of recent memory, with an array of fantastic films each vying with one another and each deserving of significant prizes. The acting race has arguably been the most exciting to watch, especially in the leading categories, where there are at least 6 or 7 actors (or more) who could rightly stake their claim to a nomination. However, there are many great performances this year which will probably go unnoticed by the Academy for one reason or another.

The Great Beauty Review
As we further descend into awards season, it is easy to get mixed up in the barrage of hugely buzzed about films which are "for your consideration" in the major categories. This is particularly true in a year such as this, where the contention for Best Picture is hotter than ever. Unfortunately, we tend to neglect the strengths of other films released around the same time that are usually pigeonholed into smaller categories.

Southcliffe Review: “Sorrow’s Child” (Series 1, Episode 3)
We are three episodes into Southcliffe, one away from its denouement, and all the individual threads are beginning to slowly but surely come together. This episode, aside from some incidental and beautifully observed moments, dispenses with the flashback structure it has employed in the first two episodes, choosing instead to further pursue the aftermath of the shootings.

Southcliffe Review: “Light Falls” (Series 1, Episode 2)
After the first episode kept itself brutally low key and focused on mainly two characters, the second episode of Channel 4 and Warp Films' Southcliffe expands its purview to a few more of the town's members as the examination of how a mass shooting alters the lives of people continues. We are introduced to two new families; the Goulds and the Salters who each have their lives dramatically touched by the tragedy as Southcliffe continues its honest, unflinching portrayal of town life destroyed by one unbelievable event.

Southcliffe Review: “The Hollow Shore” (Series 1, Episode 1)
2011's Martha Marcy May Marlene was a film that promised many great things to come from its writer-director Sean Durkin. The slow burning and deeply unsettling drama was incredibly confident in its telling, relying mostly on subtlety and stillness to tell a story which never revealed its hand to early. It was a debut that promised Durkin an exciting start on the indie filmmaking path, however after only one film Durkin was quick to make that leap from film to TV and from America to Britain for this four part miniseries; Southcliffe.

The Canyons Review
Discussing The Canyons and ignoring the cause celebre which has hung over the production since its inception is a difficult task indeed. Sight unseen The Canyons appeared to be a film that was doomed to fail. The NY Times article about the film detailed several production mishaps from difficult relationships between the actors on set to disagreements between the director, the writer and the producer over the final cut and the tone of the movie.

I’m So Excited Review
Since 1999 director Pedro Almodovar has had a fabulous run of outstanding films. From All About My Mother through to 2011's beguiling and brilliant The Skin I Live In, Almodovar has been at the very top of his game, producing work of such consistent high quality he has become one of the foremost filmmakers on the world stage. It is a shame then that in 2013, after hitting 6 simultaneous home runs, that I'm So Excited sees the director losing his footing and producing his first disappointing work in nearly 15 years.

Behind The Candelabra Review
Behind the Candelabra is a true milestone for director Steven Soderbergh as this is the last time (at least for a while) that he will be behind the camera on a feature length film. Over the space of 24 years Soderbergh has directed 26 feature length films, a few short films and a short lived TV series, so this truly is the end of an era. However, as a swan song Behind the Candelabra isn't exactly an example of Soderbergh making his grand exit, instead he tones his style and technical deftness down, allowing Michael Douglas and Matt Damon and the screenplay by Richard LaGravenese to be the stars of the show.
