The release of The Marvels trailer at the top of the week may have had the intended effect of increasing the hype for the third and final MCU movie of 2023 among the more level-headed, reasonable members of the fandom, but it’s also reinvigorated the crazy, pathetic side of the community into spewing fresh hate against star Brie Larson. Ever since Captain Marvel came out in 2019, the Carol Danvers actress has been at the center of an internet storm that barely ever quietens down.
For context, The Marvels trailer has been disliked so many times that it’s not just the most-disliked MCU trailer ever, it’s also about 3000 percent less popular than the Morbius trailer. Given that we can confidently predict that Nia DaCosta’s film will be nowhere near as bad as Sony’s infamous misfire, clearly this speaks to a deeper, all-consuming problem some quarters of the internet has with anything Larson touches. And her defenders think they know what’s really at the root of this.
With “Brie Larson” trending on Twitter as her devoted followers race to her defense, many are arguing that the reason certain people hate Larson is because of her outspoken commitment to more “diversity and equal opportunity for interviewers and journalists,” as one viral tweet put it.
And here’s the evidence:
For many people, Larson’s championing for increased diversity in the film journalism industry only serves as proof she’s “amazing.”
Apparently, the anti-Brie brigade have very long memories.
Unfortunately accurate.
We’ve no idea who’d be willing to undertake such a study, but otherwise this is a good idea.
Larson’s fearless tendency to speak her mind and stand up for her beliefs may well be part of what sends her haters into a fuming frenzy, but it’s also what makes her such perfect casting for Carol Danvers in the first place. For those who actually want to see it (which, going by the original film’s $1 billion gross, is likely a lot), The Marvels hits theaters on Nov. 10.
