‘Iron Man 3’ star says sorry after spreading “misinformation and falsehoods” in Pro-Palestine posts

This is not his first time getting his foot in his mouth.

Guy Pearce has issued an apology to the greater Jewish community for amplifying false and, quite frankly, antisemitic messages on his X account.

Pearce is one of the few Australian actors who was able to cross over into becoming a bona fide Hollywood star. Having made his name alongside Kevin Spacey in L.A. Confidential, his career just kept hitting height after height — until he finally reached a box-office peak alongside Robert Downey Jr. But lately, Pearce has been leaning into letting people know more and more about his personal life — it started with him finally telling the public his own personal story about Kevin Spacey, and now he is fully focused on Palestine advocacy.

Recently, some Hollywood stars have been very open about where they stand on the Gaza conflict, but for Pearce, he was advocating for a ceasefire before Jennifer Lawrence changed her mind. Unfortunately, Pearce slowly started going down rabbit holes that exposed him to Nick Fuentes–championed conspiracy theories about the Jewish community.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pearce’s official X page has lately turned into a haven for all manner of conspiracies that have little to do with the conflict. Some of the posts pushed the claim that all of the top three companies that sell explicit content are owned by Jews. Another conspiracy he reposted was one that blamed the Jewish community for 9/11.

After immense pressure, Pearce finally responded, saying, “It has been brought to my attention that, in my support of Palestine, I have inadvertently re-posted articles, and/or statements, that have contained misinformation and falsehoods. I am aware how sharing inaccurate content can cause confusion and distress; for this I am deeply sorry. I will certainly endeavor to be more diligent in future to verify anything I share online.”

Ultimately, the apology is a show of respect and accountability. The initial mistake has gone on to do more harm than good for the actual cause he is advocating for. The uncomfortable truth surrounding the advocacy for Palestine is that criticism of the state of Israel was bound to also be an alluring topic for people who have antisemitic prejudice. So instead of focusing on a humanitarian catastrophe, the likes of Fuentes — who is a noted and unabashed white nationalist who has time and time again expressed his admiration for Adolf Hitler — have been using this moment in history to spread tropes about Jewish influence in the media.

Pearce is not a stranger to controversy. He has previously been caught with his foot in his mouth when he was pushing against trans representation on screen. He also apologized for that. So there is a possibility here that, like the rest of us, Pearce sometimes misspeaks. But this is such an important topic that needs more nuance than the one he has showcased thus far.

Hopefully, following the apology, he makes a more pronounced effort at ensuring people see that he is not an actual antisemite. Or perhaps he should just do more research on who he chooses to give his celebrity platform to the next time he shares material on his X page.
