Jack Black confirms the ‘School of Rock’ is back in session for its 20th anniversary

Jack Black and the cast of School of Rock will be reuniting later this year for a monumental occasion, the film’s 20th anniversary.

School of Rock, released in theaters in October 2003, follows Dewey Finn, played by Black, as he navigates life after being kicked out of his band. During that time, Finn became depressed and racked up debt. Things would begin to go in Finn’s favor after accepting a job as a substitute teacher at a private elementary school. When Finn discovers that his class is filled with talented students, he turns them into a rock band and signs them up for a local competition called Battle of the Bands, where the grand prize is $20,000.

The movie also starred Mike White, Joan Cusack, Sarah Silverman, Miranda Cosgrove, Kevin Clark, Rivkah Reyes, Joey Gaydos Jr., Jordan-Claire Green, Aleisha Allen, Robert Tsai, and many more. Since School of Rock‘s debut, the film became an instant success generating over $131 million worldwide. In addition to the box office revenue, it spawned a now-canceled television series and a Broadway musical.

On April 3, while promoting his latest project, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Black shared the exciting news that the group will be getting together for the School of Rock anniversary. Although the 53-year-old didn’t disclose which cast members, aside from those children in the blockbuster, would be attending the special event, he did, however, marvel over that most of the kids in School of Rock are now “like 30.” Black said, 

“All those kids — dig this — they were 10 years old when we made that movie and now they’re all, like, 30. We’re gonna get together and have a 20-year anniversary. We like to jam. I’m looking forward to seeing all of the grownups from School of Rock.”

Black also told the publication the event is scheduled to occur sometime in September, a month before the film’s actual anniversary, and that he will “100 percent” be posting images on social media. Sadly one person that will be missed at the School of Rock 20th anniversary event is Kevin Clark. Clark, who portrayed drummer Freddy “Spazzy McGee” Jones, was tragically killed in May 2021 at the age of 32. Clark’s cause of death was ultimately determined as a road accident after he was struck by a car while cycling in Chicago.
