There isn’t a television viewer out there who hasn’t found themselves crushed at least once by the cancellation of a series they held close to their heart, and we can now add Mark Hamill to the list after the Star Wars icon and voice acting legend voiced his discontent at the fate of American Auto.
The NBC workplace comedy drew decent enough ratings and stellar reviews throughout its two-season run, but NBC has decided that enough is enough. That’s devastating news for anyone who enjoyed following the adventures of the meandering executives who were doing their best to revive the fortunes of the flagging company in the face of an ever-changing industry, but Hamill has already outlined his hopes that it could end up being revived elsewhere.
Of course, anyone to have been following the small screen’s heightened content purge will know full well that nothing is guaranteed when it comes to axed episodic favorites, especially when the likes of Hannibal and Warrior Nun have seen their respective campaigns drag on for months and years without any sort of tangible results.
That being said, the sitcom does have a better track record than most genres of being given the opportunity to rise phoenix-like from the ashes, so it can’t be ruled out just yet that American Auto won’t live again to fight another day. With a high-profile backer such as Hamill in its corner, though, maybe he can weaponize his wholesomely engaging social media presence to try and convince another station or streaming service that American Auto is worthy of being revived.
