Nicole Kidman felt liberated after divorce from Tom Cruise. Why? Because she could finally wear heels again

Fans loved Kidman's subtle dig at ex-husband Cruise.

In 2001 Tom Cruise filed for divorce with his then wife, Nicole Kidman, after nearly 11 years together. Clearly the Hollywood power couple just weren’t meant to be but Kidman didn’t seem too upset about it as she shared one specific benefit that came about from the divorce.

A clip of the famous actress talking about her split with box office star Tom Cruise has recently resurfaced online and fans of Kidman are loving the silver lining she shared. Speaking on The Late Show with David Letterman, the talk show host questioned the Moulin Rouge actress about her recent divorce to which she responded, “Well I can wear heels now.”

The comment is a clear dig at her ex-husband’s height as Cruise is known for being somewhat below the average height, (he’s estimated to be around 5ft 7in tall). Kidman’s comment was met with laughter and applause from Letterman and the studio audience while the actress made a coy facial expression before saying “let’s move on.”

“That’s gonna cost you,” Letterman jokingly replies.

Nicole Kidman has plenty of supporters

The tongue-in-cheek response is one of the many reasons Nicole Kidman is such a beloved actress. Responding to the clip online, netizens on Reddit commended her dig at Cruise. One person called the actress “iconic,” while another wrote “She is a woman of great substance, intellect, and authenticity. I have great respect for her.”

Plenty also took the opportunity to fire a few shots of their own at Cruise, “I want more dirt on Tom cruise,” wrote one, “Nicole was always the more charismatic, funnier and talented one in that pairing and I stand by this statement.” A third focused on the ominous statement from Letterman, “His “that’s gonna cost ya” was kinda chilling in the context of Tom Cruise.”

The couple married in 1990 after meeting on the set of Days of Thunder earlier that year. During their marriage they adopted two children. By 2001 the pair had drifted and the divorce papers were filed citing “irreconcilable differences” between Kidman and Cruise.

Of course, there has been plenty of speculation about the two actors both during and after their marriage. Many Reddit comments pointed out Cruise’s affiliation with Scientology as a reason for disliking the actor. “However talented or charismatic he may be – he’s still in Scientology and that’s unredeemable,” one Redditor wrote.

As for Nicole, she has since remarried to country singer Keith Urban in 2006 and they seem much happier together. Plus Keith Urban is a little taller (5ft 10in) although still an inch shorter than Kidman although that doesn’t seem to have stopped her from wearing high heels.
