The advertisement has drawn sharp criticism from TikTok users who described it as ‘Nazi propaganda’ and a ‘racialized dog whistle’.” Critics argued that the campaign’s focus on genetic traits, combined with Sweeney’s blue eyes and blonde hair, echoed dangerous rhetoric about racial superiority. One TikTok user stated that the ad “echoes pseudoscientific language of racial superiority” and noted how such traits have historically been used to support racial hierarchies.

The backlash extended beyond social media, with celebrities including Doja Cat and Lizzo publicly mocking the campaign. In response to the growing controversy, American Eagle released a statement defending the advertisement. The company insisted that “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” was always about the clothing items and emphasized that it celebrates how everyone wears their jeans with confidence.
