Jake, Melanie’s high school boyfriend, and now-estranged husband, plays a pivotal role in the narrative as a symbol of Melanie’s past and the decisions she must make to move forward with her life.

Lucas does a great job of capturing Jake’s ambivalent sentiments as he tries to sort out his complicated attraction to Melanie. His acting makes us care about Jake as he faces challenges in relationships, forgiveness, and second chances. Patrick Bateman and Craig McDermott both work as investment bankers for Pierce & Pierce. Lucas, who plays McDermott, infuses the character with grace and refinement, expertly portraying the slick image of the Wall Street elite. McDermott’s Conversations and social interactions with Bateman and their coworkers throughout the film reveal the cutthroat nature of the investment banking industry.

Since Lucas plays a character who seems oblivious to Bateman’s dark and violent undercurrents, his performance contributes to the film’s overall feeling of detachment and moral ambiguity. The cast of American Psycho also includes Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Chloë Sevigny, Samantha Mathis, Cara Seymour, and Justin Theroux.
