The DCU now has its Superman but don’t expect it to land a Batman anytime soon

Though we may have been graced with DC's Superman casting, James Gunn lets fans know that Batman's casting is still a way off.

James Gunn and Peter Safran have finally picked their new Superman and a new Lois Lane for their Superman: Legacy film. This is excellent news for all those waiting with bated breath to see what would happen to the character after Henry Cavill announced his time in the cape was over, but another role still needs filling, and we may have to be patient.

It was announced today that Gunn and Safran’s Superman will be played by David Corenswet (Pearl), with Lois Lane played by Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel). Fans will be rejoicing that some of their top picks took the roles, with Corenswet and Brosnahan being apparent frontrunners for the parts for quite some time. Though we may all feel some relief at finally knowing the names attached to these iconic roles, one character we are still unsure about is DC’s other greatest caped hero, Batman.

When asked on his Instagram post announcing the new casting how close he is to casting the new Batman, Gunn responded: “Miles and miles away.” Many in the comments section joked that this could, in fact, be a clue and started suggesting that the director was looking at actor Miles Teller for the part. More likely than not, they really just aren’t focusing on the character for a while as they still have more characters to cast for Superman: Legacy, such as Superman’s arch nemesis, Lex Luthor.

Ben Affleck will be retiring from the role as the new DC will be introducing a brand new Batman as part of its revamping. The new actor will take over for Affleck but will remain separate from the Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise, which exists in DC’s Elseworlds and contains DC property outside the DC Universe canon.

It might be a while until we meet a new Bruce Wayne, with Superman: Legacy set to land in theatres in July 2025, followed by The Batman 2 hard on its heels in October 2025 (though this could be at risk). To have a new Batman introduced the same year we see Pattinson’s Batman return isn’t exactly the best timing. We have already had a fair number of Batmen running around recently, with Affleck, Pattinson, and Michael Keaton returning to the role in The Flash, so a little downtime from the character isn’t the worst thing in the world, is it?
