Tom Holland’s new Spider-Man suit just accidentally spoiled what Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom will look like

Oops, spoiler alert.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has begun production, and with it comes a new look at Tom Holland’s updated superhero costume.

The official Spider-Man social media account released a 23-second video on August 2, revealing Holland’s new suit design just one day before filming commenced. The clip has generated significant online engagement, receiving nearly 350,000 likes and accumulating over 23 million views.

According to Dexerto, the new Spider-Man suit has sparked extensive discussion among fans, who have analyzed every detail from the raised webbing pattern to the enlarged eye lenses and the repositioned web shooters now located on the outside of Holland’s wrists. These design changes represent a notable evolution from previous iterations of the costume seen in earlier Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Holland has previously discussed which Spider-Man suit is his personal favorite among his various MCU costume changes.

However, the suit’s reveal may have inadvertently provided fans with insight into another major MCU character’s appearance. The design bears a striking resemblance to artwork that appeared on an official promotional banner earlier this year, which could serve as an early preview for Robert Downey Jr’s upcoming role as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

The promotional banner may have revealed both costumes months ago

Earlier this year, a promotional banner displayed at the Disney Blockbuster Consumer Products panel attracted attention for featuring images of both Spider-Man and Doctor Doom. At the time, many fans dismissed the banner’s significance because both images appeared to be existing artwork rather than new reveals. The Spider-Man image was identified as Marvel stock photography, while the Doctor Doom illustration was recognized as artwork by Alex Ross.

The accuracy of the Spider-Man image from that banner has now been confirmed with the release of Holland’s actual costume. The promotional artwork correctly predicted details, including the lens design and Holland’s updated spider logo placement on the suit. This level of accuracy has led fans to speculate that the accompanying Doctor Doom artwork may similarly represent an authentic preview of Downey’s costume design.

Robert Downey Jr wore a comparable outfit during his surprise reveal as Doctor Doom at San Diego Comic-Con, an announcement that completely overshadowed Deadpool & Wolverine’s opening weekend, and his masked appearance in the Fantastic Four post-credits scene shows similarities to Ross’ artistic interpretation. These visual connections have strengthened fan theories about the promotional banner’s predictive value.

Fan reactions on social media have expressed excitement about the possibility of a comic-accurate Doctor Doom costume design, with one user writing that they “can’t freakin wait” for what appears to be a faithful adaptation from the comics. Another fan speculated about potential costume evolution throughout the film, suggesting Downey might wear the classic design initially before upgrading to more advanced technology later in the story.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for theatrical release on July 31, 2026, while Avengers: Doomsday will arrive in cinemas on December 18, 2026.
