What happened to Madonna? The Queen of Pop’s hospital stay and postponed tour, explained

Like a prayer, we will keep the Queen of Pop in our thoughts.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 40 years since Madonna released her first self-titled album in 1983. The now 64-year-old has continued churning out new music and performing on stage year after year, leaving many to assume she is impervious to the drawbacks of growing older. Sadly, we were given a reality check on June 24 when the Queen of Pop was immediately rushed to the hospital amid her preparations for her Celebrations tour

Madonna was just days away from commencing her Celebrations tour on July 15 in Vancouver, Canada. The pop icon announced the tour earlier this year to honor her four decades in the music industry and the anniversary of her breakout single, “Holiday,” from her 1983 self-titled album. The tour was to mark the first time the singer hit the road since her Madame X theater-based shows in 2019 and 2020.

Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary broke the news of her hospitalization on June 28 in an Instagram post. In addition to her health scare, he also confirmed the Celebration tour would be postponed.

Why was Madonna rushed to the hospital?

In a shocking update, Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary shared that the Grammy Award-winning singer had developed a “serious bacterial infection which lead [sic] to a serval day stay in the ICU.” According to Page Six, her daughter Lourdes Leon was by her side during this time. Although she is reportedly out of the hospital, Oseary has shared that Madonna is “still under medical care.”

The good news is that a “full recovery is expected,” although in order to achieve such a recovery, Madonna will have to “pause all commitments” at this time. This unfortunately includes the Celebrations tour.

What does this mean for the Celebrations tour?

As confirmed by her manager, Madonna’s Celebrations tour will hit the pause button for now while the singer regains her health. This means the previously scheduled July 15 start date will get pushed back. Madonna’s team has not provided an official word on when that might be, but the assumption is that it will restart later in the year. However, given the serious nature of her health scare, 2024 is also a possibility.

The news might come as a sad blow to fans who have been looking forward to seeing the Queen of Pop on the road either for the first time or the first time in a long time, but it’s important to remember that Madonna’s iconic pop status does not exclude her from the perils of health like the rest of us. Without her health, there would be no Celebrations tour. The best and only thing for us to do is pray she comes out on top.

As for new tour dates and potential refunds — Oseary said “We will share more details with you as soon as we have them.” The same goes for us: We Got This Covered will update you with new information about Madonna’s rescheduled tour dates and ticket prices as soon as it is announced.
