10 Fantastic Superheroes From The Future

For a genre that continually reboots itself to retain the status quo, superhero comics sure do spend a lot of time wondering what will happen to their characters down the road. Visiting an alternate vision of the timeline or some dark – sometimes it’s good, but mostly not - future is a favourite pastime of many comic books. Naturally, then, a heap of superheroes who are citizens of centuries into the future have been created over the years, usually finding their way back into the past - er, present - to meet up with the original heroes that inspired them.

Legion of Superheroes

The rest of the heroes on this list hail from terrible, or at the very least troubled, visions of the future. What makes the Legion of Super-Heroes stand out, then, is that they come from more of a Star Trek-like positive idea of what’s to come. From the 30th (later 31st) century, the Legion are a bunch of teen heroes who have been inspired by the superheroes of our present to follow in their footsteps.

From the mind of Otto Binder and Al Plastino, the Legion of Super-Heroes dates back to 1958 – predating more famous super-teams like the Avengers and the Justice League. A major part of Superman’s adolescence in Smallville, this team – including Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad – traveled back in time to meet their idol Superman as a boy. The funny thing is that their adventures turn out to inspire him into becoming the hero they know.

Most known for their handy Legion flight rings, the team have been rebooted so many times over the years that it’s hard to keep track, but their long shelf-life and position in Superman’s mythology more than makes up for that.
