It Looks Like Another Love TKO In Batman #14

For the past three decades, one of my favorite dynamics shared by any two characters in all of comics has to be that of the one possessed by Batman and Catwoman. To casual readers, it may come as shock that this is touched on only sporadically in this medium, and that's why Batman #14 is a must-read in my book.

For the past three decades, one of my favorite dynamics shared by any two characters in all of comics has to be that of the one possessed by Batman and Catwoman. To casual readers, it may come as shock that this is touched on only sporadically in this medium, and that’s why Batman #14 is a must-read in my book.

As scribe Tom King reunites with his artistic collaborator from Vertigo’s The Sheriff of Babylon, Mitch Gerads, we can look forward to witnessing a nearly cinematic experience. One glance at the preview gallery will affirm that statement, as we see Bruce and Selina under the moonlight, handily creating a noir-ish yet romantic feel. And we would expect nothing less than something evoking multiple moods given the complicated relationship between these two.

With the next major arc, “I am Bane,” kicking off with issue #16 in February, a smaller and more intimate tale may be just the right prescription fans need in the meantime. Although taking this interim tale as an indicator that shorter arcs may soon be the norm at DC could be considered reaching, let’s not rule out the publisher testing the waters for such a shift. After all, this is one title that may benefit from a tighter focus.

“I AM SUICIDE” epilogue! Back in Gotham City, Batman and Catwoman confront their past and make a decision about their future that may change their city forever.

Batman #14 brings justice to comic shops this Wednesday, January 4.
