Marvel Comics Changes Thor’s Hammer To Make It Gender Neutral

The battle for gender equality'll continue to rage on no matter what a comic book page says. But that doesn't mean pop culture juggernaut Marvel won't do its best at the frontlines to include all walks of life. And apparently, their most recent effort involves Thor's iconic hammer, Mjolnir.

The battle for gender equality’ll continue to rage on no matter what a comic book page says. But that doesn’t mean pop culture juggernaut Marvel won’t do its best at the frontlines to include all walks of life. And apparently, their most recent effort involves Thor‘s iconic hammer, Mjolnir.

The “War of the Realms” comic recently concluded with the God of Thunder making a new, nearly identical hammer. That is, with one major change. The inscription, which has always read “Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor,” has been adapted to be gender neutral.

It now reads, “Whosoever holds this hammer, if they be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.” You can check out the subtle, yet important change for yourself down below.

This effort coincides with several recent requests to make the superhero and entertainment worlds more inclusive. For example, Victoria Alonso, EVP of Production at Marvel, stated a few weeks ago that the name “X-Men” is “outdated,” and should represent the several female heroes in the group.

Whether or not that change’ll be adapted has yet to be seen. But while the idea sounds promising on paper, many comic book fans may find tradition to be a more worthwhile cause. And the same can be said about this change to Mjolnir.

While the comics have adapted, we’ve yet to see if the MCU will do the same thing. If they do, we probably won’t find out until at least Guardians of the Galaxy 3, where Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder’s most likely to make his next big screen appearance.

But if they do make this change, we could see a lot more “worthy” individuals wield the hammer (Captain Marvel, Gamora, Scarlett Witch, the list goes on), now that we’ve seen Steve Rogers do it.

What are your thoughts on this, though? Would you like to see the Marvel movies make this change to Thor‘s hammer? Or should they move forward with what they’ve already got? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
