New I Am Groot Series Begins Sprouting This May

As Marvel Studios primes itself for the cinematic release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this May, the publishing side of things intends to mirror the expected big screen success. As Marvel Studios primes itself for the cinematic release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this May, the publishing side of things intends to mirror the expected big screen success. So, it came as no surprise when All-New Guardians of the Galaxy, a book featuring the very same lineup to be found in the movies, was announced not long ago.

No doubt looking to complement that release, the House of Ideas are now set to launch I am Groot, a new series following the adventures of, you guessed it, Baby Groot this May. Written by Chris Hastings and illustrated by Flaviano, this ongoing will, as Hastings himself put it, “take the very cute, very small Groot and completely remove him from the comfort zone of the Guardians of the Galaxy.”

When I first laid eyes on this thing, I thought to myself, “This looks like a Skottie Young cover come to life.” So, you can imagine my amusement upon finding out that Young will provide not one, but two variant covers for the debut issue. I guess great minds really do think alike.

An official synopsis for I am Groot #1 can be found below, along with a look at the standard cover drawn by Marco D’Alfonso:

When the Guardians of the Galaxy get caught in a wormhole, a smaller-than-normal Groot is separated billions of light-years away from the team. Falling to a planet below, Groot discovers he is on an entirely alien and unknown world full of strange creatures and societies. Seriously underdeveloped and with nobody who can understand him, Groot will need to make the journey to the center of this world and find the way back to his family!
