Rebirth’s New Batman: 9 Possible Replacements For Bruce Wayne

Despite the dull conclusion to "The Button" in The Flash #22, the arc did leave us mulling the possibility that Bruce Wayne could be ready to hang up the cape and cowl after a conversation with his father in Batman #22. Now, don't pop a blood vessel here, because there's no chance that DC Comics will kill off its biggest cash cow for good. That's never going to happen. It's like Superman dying every couple of years; you know he'll always come back to life after some time. What we're likely to see is Bruce Wayne giving up being the Bat (temporarily), while someone else takes up the mantle.

Thomas Wayne

Now, this would be a major swerve. Let’s say that Doctor Manhattan saved Thomas Wayne somehow and he comes back as the Batman of the Rebirth universe? Shh. Did you hear that? It’s the sound of a million minds being blown right now.

Flashpoint Batman has become a fan-favorite character, with his recent appearance in “The Button” only fueling his burgeoning popularity. As the fans call for a longer Thomas Wayne arc, this is perhaps the perfect opportunity for DC to explore this enticing option. Can you imagine his Batman going up against Deathstroke, for example? Bones would be shattered, people!

It’s a long shot here, but after all the recent events in Rebirth, it’s not entirely impossible. Yeah, Batman #22 provided a satisfying goodbye for Thomas and Bruce, but would you say no to another Flashpoint Batman appearance? Exactly.

Terry McGinnis

With all the time travel in the DC universe, it’s plausible that Terry McGinnis will go back in time at some point. Maybe it could be tied to the three Jokers story or another threat that he’ll need to warn the current continuity about? Whatever the angle, a futuristic Batman in the current world would be a sight for sore eyes.

If the writers feel like having some fun, there could be a nod to Back to the Future, where Terry encounters his younger parents and doesn’t know how to react. Additionally, there’s the potential to explore the fish-out-of-water trope with Terry living in current times. It could be like a reverse Captain America story.

To close the loop, Terry could be the one to convince Bruce to carry on the Batman legacy, telling him of the future and all that the Dark Knight’s done. Bruce is a sentimental guy, so chances are that would hit him right in the feels and inspire him to carry on, which is what’s bound to happen eventually.
