A school trip took a rather bizarre turn in Nyack, New York, after a large group of school girls allegedly got lost in a massive drainage tunnel. The group ultimately emerged from a drain in the patio of a Rockland County restaurant.
According to Nyack Mayor Joe Rand, the girls had been on a school trip where they were visiting Nyack Memorial Park as per CBS News. At some point a large group of girls entered a drainage tunnel which was designed to collect most of the village’s stormwater runoff. “They saw the culvert, they saw the cave, and they thought, let’s go take a look, see what’s there,” the mayor explained.
The incident occurred on June 10 and, according to the mayor, the girls entered the culvert on their own and once inside “they started walking, and they just kept walking and walking and walking.” The group travelled roughly half a mile before being rescued from the drain at an exit near the Hudson House restaurant.
“I was in the office when I heard kids chattering,” restaurant owner Matt Hudson said. When he investigated he witnessed the group of girls clambering out of a drain behind his restaurant. “Sure enough, we came back here into the patio, looked here, and it was filling up with kids.”
Mayor Rand stated that “Everybody was safe,” but that “it was dangerous, they shouldn’t have been doing it.”
Some are doubting the official story
While the mayor states that the schoolgirls entered the tunnels by themselves online conspiracy theorists have claimed that there might be more to the story. While few outlets have reported on the actual number of schoolgirls who emerged from the drain, the number being spread around online is that it was around 71 girls. It’s important to emphasize that this number has not been verified by reliable sources.
Influencer Bo Grant expressed doubt that 71 schoolgirls would all decide to enter a storm drain without an adult noticing they were gone and suggested that something else was afoot. She also questions why authorities weren’t notified when the girls went missing, accusing mayor Rand of “doing a fabulous job playing the whole thing off.”
Another individual on X claimed he was “not buying the official narrative” stating, “This is sketchy AF.”
While people online have expressed their doubts over the official story there is no sign authorities are investigating. In any case, Mayor Rand has vowed to review safety measures regarding the culvert and has reminded visitors that the drains are not for recreational use.
