In a day that will surely go down in legend for the Pelham Police Department, a Dunkin‘ semi truck broke down directly in front of their building. In an amusing post on their Facebook page, they said “Well… this is one way to get the police department’s attention.”
It appears their officers downed equipment and rushed to the scene to provide whatever assistance they could offer. However, these are law enforcement professionals who certainly wouldn’t prioritize the chance of free donuts over other situations that might require their attention, right?
The department is playing coy on that one: “We’re not saying officers responded faster than usual… but when a truck full of donuts is involved, you don’t take any chances.” However, they say the truck was eventually towed away, and insist, “No donuts were harmed during this incident.”
“A policeman’s dream”
A heaping helping of donuts is, as Twin Peaks memorably said, “a policeman’s dream”, and this isn’t the first time cops have found their work leading them straight to frosted goodness. In 2024, Michigan cops responded to a truck losing its load, arriving at the scene to find the highway strewn with Krispy Kreme donuts.
In that instance, officers were left “grieving” as “most of the Krispy Kreme donuts were lost”, though in the comments people wonder whether some of the evidence in this case might be hidden “well hidden in the belly of the officers”. Krispy Kreme itself reached out to thank the cops, saying, “Doughnut worry, we’ll rise again!” The department responded, “Let us know when you need an escort. We’re always here to help”.
Cops and donuts are a stereotype for good reason, to the point where serious scientific studies have been conducted to explore whether this might be a problem. A study published in 2025 titled “Associations Between Occupational Stress, Disordered Eating, and Obesity Among Police Officers in North Carolina” found that stressed cops often binge-eat sugary junk food as a result of “posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD] symptoms, anti-police sentiment, and fear of victimization.”
Obesity in cops is a serious problem – just look at these two out-of-breath officers who were forced to commandeer an Uber to pursue a suspect – but in the modern day many departments provide gym facilities (or discounts on local gym membership) and actively encourage officers to burn off any frosted treats they consume. That said, if you’re driving a semi truck full of donuts and happen to break down right in front of the police department, don’t be surprised if you leave the scene a few cases lighter.
