A New Zealand journalist was recording a news report in Auckland when a seagull flew straight into her face. The bird hit her so hard that it left her bleeding. The whole thing was caught on camera, and the video quickly spread online.
According to The Sun, Jessica Tyson, 32, works for Te Ao with Moana. She was filming in Auckland’s business district when the bird crashed into her face. The hit was so strong that it cut the skin above her eye. Right after the impact, Tyson shouted and covered her face with her hands. Her cameraman saw the blood and immediately told her she was bleeding.
The former Miss World NZ shared the video on Instagram, showing the cut above her eyebrow. She joked about what happened and wrote, “POV Just trying to do your job when nature has other plans.” She also made a funny comment about the bird, saying it needed glasses.
Bird attacks on journalists are becoming a strange trend
Tyson told her followers that she was fine, though she would have a small scar above her eye. She said she was laughing about the whole thing just ten minutes after it happened. The video got more than 200,000 views and 6,000 likes in just a few hours. Many people, including singer Stan Walker, left comments showing shock and amusement. Some celebrities have had their own unexpected moments go viral, like when a famous director publicly shared harsh views.
This is not the first time a journalist has been attacked by a bird while reporting. Last year, Australian journalist Ursula Heger was attacked repeatedly by a bird during a live broadcast. The bird kept landing on her head, hitting her with its wings, and grabbing her hair with its feet.
Heger tried to stay professional and keep reporting, but the bird would not stop. She had to crouch down to avoid it, but the bird still came at her. The cameraman was laughing while filming. Eventually, Heger started laughing too and called it one of the most ridiculous moments of her life. Wild incidents caught on camera often go viral, much like when a thief swallowed stolen property.
Both Tyson and Heger were able to laugh about their experiences and share the videos online. The clips went viral and got huge amounts of attention. It seems like journalists working outdoors need to watch out for birds that do not care about their work.
These incidents show that wildlife can interrupt even the most professional situations. Both women handled the attacks well and turned them into moments that people found entertaining online.
