A flight from Melbourne to Doha turned into a nightmare this past Friday, the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks, when two male passengers became increasingly aggressive, eventually forcing fellow travelers and crew to step in and restrain them. The situation on the Virgin Australia flight, VA7, operated by Qatar Airways, escalated significantly as the men began making violent threats, including claims that they possessed a gun.
The incident left many passengers shaken. A passenger told the Sydney Morning Herald that the two men appeared “extremely agitated and restless” from the moment they boarded the aircraft. “They were repeatedly getting in and out of their seats, moving around the cabin and into my personal space, and touching or moving my belongings.”
She also recalled, “They were also repeatedly rummaging through their luggage and saying they were looking for items they had apparently misplaced.” At one point, the woman even requested that the alcohol service be stopped for the men because of their disruptive behavior. SMH reported that the men were arrested by Qatari authorities as soon as the plane landed on Friday night.
An argument that grew
Per the outlet, things got bad about six hours before the aircraft was scheduled to land. The men, who the witness believed were brothers, began to argue and fight with one another. When the crew attempted to intervene, the men refused to follow instructions. The woman stated, “The men would not comply with instructions from the crew, and ultimately had to be restrained.”
The threats became even more alarming as the men allegedly spoke about killing people and using a gun. A fellow passenger stepped in to help restrain one of the brothers, while cabin crew members worked to handle the other. PEOPLE reported that the situation was so volatile that one of the men remained “extremely angry and agitated – he was yelling, spitting, kicking and headbutting a flight attendant.”
The anonymous witness praised those who helped, telling SMH, “Several male passengers stepped forward to assist the cabin crew in restraining him, and I have to commend those passengers. They were absolutely amazing and showed enormous courage in helping the crew and protecting other passengers.” She also credited the cabin crew for their professionalism, doing “everything they possibly could to calm the situation and protect the other passengers.”
Some of these details have been corroborated by other passengers. PEOPLE noted that one of the passengers was 3AW Drive host Jacqui Felgate, who shared footage from the flight to Instagram. The video showed crew members struggling to manage the situation, and another clip displays police officers boarding the plane upon arrival, which prompted applause from the passengers on board.
One passenger told Felgate that they helped “get the cable ties on” one of the individuals. Another witness reported to PEOPLE that it took roughly six to seven people to restrain each man in the galley area until the plane could land.
Another noted, “Very scary, these guys were completely agitated and aggressive. Really big props to the Qatar flight attendants they were hands on for about 10 hours straight and I saw a couple of them get physically abused. They really couldn’t do too much more.” A third witness told Felgate, “Terrifying and disgraceful what the poor flight attendants had to deal with.”
Damien Ractliffe, a former chief racing reporter for the Sydney Morning Herald, was seated at the front of the plane and witnessed the uniformed officers boarding the aircraft in Doha. The question of whether these men will be allowed to return to Australia has been on the minds of many who were on the flight.
One passenger told 3AW, “[The] only thing [I] would love to understand is if these people are coming back into Australia. Given the language they were screaming about wanting to hurt and shoot people, they really shouldn’t be allowed back in.”
Qatar Airways released an official statement regarding the event: “We can confirm that two male passengers were involved in a physical altercation on board flight VA7 from Melbourne to Doha on Friday, operated by Qatar Airways. Both passengers were restrained and, upon arrival in Doha, were handed over to local authorities. The safety and wellbeing of our crew and passengers remain our highest priority.”
As of now, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has not confirmed whether the individuals involved are Australian citizens.
