‘Owwie Wowie’: NY woman attempts viral TikTok trend. Her landing sends her straight to the ER in a wheelchair

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

A woman from New York tried a popular TikTok challenge and ended up in the hospital. Amanda Diaz shared what happened in several videos that got over 1.6 million views total.

The challenge is called Maui Wowie. People hang from street lights or poles while they lip sync to a Kid Cudi song. Then they drop down to the ground. Diaz jumped off a street light and seemed okay at first. But her video caption said “I am never attempting this again HAHAHA.”

Things got worse after that. In another TikTok video, Diaz said “I was never sporty, and this proves it. I did the Maui Wowie thing today. Guess who messed up her ankle and pulled her shoulder.” Her last video shows her at the emergency room. The text on screen says “Ofc this would happen to me.” She was pushed around in a wheelchair and left with a brace on her foot. “I am never attempting a tik tok trend again,” she wrote.

Everyone is doing this trend

The whole thing started on September 5, 2025. A TikTok user named @aaronxbrownn posted a video of himself hanging from a street sign in Honolulu. Other people saw it and started doing the same thing. The trend uses a song called “Maui Wowie” by Kid Cudi from 2008. The song talks about a type of weed from Hawaii. The lyrics say “Goin’ back to Honolulu just to get that, that Maui Wowie.”

Millions of people have watched these videos on TikTok. The hashtag has gotten over 150 million views. Many videos get between 1 million and 5 million views each. Kid Cudi even joined in and posted his own video hanging from a traffic light. He thanked his fans and said the song was “17 years old and timeless.” Because of the trend, more people are listening to the song now. Streams went up by 750% and it reached number 71 on the Billboard charts.

But Diaz found out this trend is harder than it looks. She hurt her shoulder, lower back, and ankle. She had to put Icy Hot on all those spots. “I can’t even carry my body weight clearly. I need to work my arms out more,” she said.

The trend might seem easy when you watch it on your phone, but it takes a lot of strength. Like a woman who immediately regretted trying a Big Mac after 30 years, Diaz learned that some things don’t go as planned. Hanging from street poles and then dropping down is risky. You need strong arms and good balance.TikTok now shows warnings on these videos to tell people about the dangers. This is not the first time someone got hurt doing something for social media, similar to when a Starbucks worker did things they’d never done before on their last day.
