Soccer giant Manchester City has been accused of ‘cheating on industrial scale,’ leaving fates of FIFA stars like Erling Haaland in limbo

“I feel unprecedented punishment is required here.”

Manchester City is currently embroiled in a major scandal after being found guilty of systematically breaking the Premier League’s financial rules for nearly a decade. This monumental development has sent shockwaves through the world of soccer, casting a long shadow over the club’s recent history and success, and leaving fans and players alike uncertain of the future.

According to CNN, the Premier League, which is the domestic British division in which City plays, released a statement to disclose the findings of an independent commission investigation. This investigation began after a series of leaked emails in 2018 indicated the issue. The statement claimed that the club was guilty of breaching financial regulations well over 100 times between 2009 and 2018.

The findings reportedly suggest the club used a series of sham contracts and commercial agreements to conceal the true state of its finances, essentially disguising secret funding from its UAE ownership. The league claims the club overstated its income by roughly $1.18 billion and understated expenses by tens of millions.

This is an unprecidented situation

According to CNN, Manchester City was bought by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan in 2008 through the Abu Dhabi United Group. His ownership brought billions in funding that upgraded every aspect of the club. With some of the best soccer stars and managers now signing on, it rocketed out of mediocrity and began dominating the league, winning multiple titles. The independent panel now says it was all done illegally.

ABC noted that the fallout from this verdict leaves an array of sanctions on the table, including heavy fines, significant points deductions, or even total expulsion from the Premier League. Per CNN, City rejected these findings, claiming it has ‘irrefutable evidence’ of its innocence and promised a relentless campaign to clear its name. CEO Ferran Soriano labeled the case a “Premier League conspiracy theory” in an internal video shared with staff.

CNN noted that the potential for punishment is truly vast because there is no direct precedent for a case of this magnitude. While other clubs have faced points deductions for smaller rule breaches, pundits like Ian Wright have described this situation as “cheating on an industrial scale.” He further said, “I feel unprecedented punishment is required here.”

If the appeal fails, the consequences could be catastrophic. The club could see its titles stripped, or it could face a points deduction so severe that it results in relegation to the Championship, a lower division. Even more extreme, the independent commission could technically move to expel the club from the league entirely. If that were to happen, the club would have to apply for membership in the English Football League, potentially starting over.

SI reported that the futures of top-tier stars like Erling Haaland are now plunged into uncertainty. Interestingly, it seems there is a major contractual oversight at play here. Since relegation was never considered a possibility for a club that has remained in the top four for 16 years, there are no relegation clauses in player contracts. A relegation clause is meant to protect players in the case of a demotion and allows another club to buy them as a discount.

According to SI, Haaland is currently valued at $249.4 million, which would be the price another club would have to pay for him. That is, unless a new agreement is reached, or the club waits till his deal expires in 2034. Haaland’s skill and presence will likely still be in demand, but it leaves other players in a very precarious position, as they could be stuck at the club even if it loses its top-flight status.

ABC noted that there is also the potential for a massive wave of litigation. Rival clubs have reportedly begun seeking advice on whether they have a case for financial compensation. If City’s results were influenced by illicit funding, teams that missed out on Champions League qualification or were relegated as a result of City’s performance could argue that they lost out on significant revenue. This could reportedly trigger a legal process lasting for years.

The outcome and possible punishment are dependent on City’s appeal. The outlet noted that until that is announced, the coming few seasons until the commission’s decision stand to be meaningless as City’s results could be scrapped.

Many see this as a betrayal. Former Manchester United player Roy Keane, the inspiration for Ted lasso’s Roy Kent, reportedly said, “(City) knew it would hurt a lot of people, but they still done it. If I was a player, I would 100% be sticking those medals in the bin. It’s cheating.”

“I actually feel for the Man City players,” former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher said per CNN. “The Premier League have called it a sham five times in this statement.“
