Three Florida teens at McDonald’s see a man struggling to change a tire. They go to help, only to urgently call 911

Small, often trivial steps that sometimes become the difference between life and death.

A trio of teens from Florida unexpectedly became hometown heroes after stopping to help an elderly man struggling to change a tire. They thought he just needed help with his car — it turned out he had much bigger problems.

Diego Fernandez-Delgado, 65, was out for an afternoon drive down South Flamingo Road in Cooper City. It was reportedly a beautiful, warm afternoon. According to a report by People, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said Fernandez-Delgado’s initial problem seemed minor: a blown tire. He promptly got out of his car to figure out how to switch it out.

The Sheriff’s Office also shared that Fernandez-Delgado’s phone had reportedly run out of battery. And granted, Florida has seen much bigger problems lately — with billionaire celebrities allegedly insisting on driving its roads while inebriated. But for Fernandez-Delgado, the situation was a little more complicated than a flat tire.

As he struggled to change the tire, three teens sitting at a nearby McDonald’s could immediately tell he needed help. Brody Murray, 17, Cody Magrone, 16, and Logan Royer, 16, decided to head outside and assist him. But almost immediately after interacting with him, they realized Fernandez-Delgado was not doing well.

The teens suspected the heat might be playing a role. Temperatures on April 19 — the day of the incident — reportedly climbed close to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Fearing Fernandez-Delgado might be suffering from a heat-related illness, the boys decided to call 911.

The Sheriff’s Office later revealed that the teens stayed calm and carefully followed instructions from emergency responders to keep Fernandez-Delgado comfortable until authorities arrived. Officials also explained that Fernandez-Delgado was too ill to properly communicate what was wrong with him over the phone. When deputies and paramedics arrived, he was reportedly “feeling weak, having difficulty breathing and chest pains.”

Body camera footage from the scene showed the boys remaining by Fernandez-Delgado’s side until deputies arrived with paramedics in tow. He was then transported to a local hospital for treatment, where doctors later discovered that he had actually suffered a heart attack while trying to change his tire on the side of the road.

The Sheriff’s Office said the three boys’ actions were likely the reason Fernandez-Delgado received medical care quickly enough to save his life. He has since been discharged from the hospital and is now recuperating at home under the watchful care of his family.

Fernandez-Delgado’s son, Cristian Fernandez, expressed deep gratitude for the boys’ actions. He shared that when his father realized something was seriously wrong and nobody was around to help him, he started praying. In his eyes, the boys became the physical manifestation of those answered prayers.

The sheriff later added, “Their actions serve as a powerful reminder: sometimes, the difference between life and death starts with simply choosing to step in and help.”

In times of extreme polarization, there may be no better reminder that our neighbors are ultimately all we have. You never know who might be looking out for you — and you never know who might need you on any given day.
