Now that everybody has had more than enough time to marvel at what Rockstar managed to do with GTA V on next generation consoles, it’s time to wonder where they can go next. Step up to the plate, Red Dead Redemption 2!

While many would find themselves so wholly enveloped by the possibilities of tearing around another of Rockstar’s 21st Century arenas, a step back in time could prove to be just as fun at this point.

A few rumours for Red Dead 2 have suggested the game could be a prequel, but I feel like a direct sequel could actually be a lot more expansive. Following the events of the first game and the death of John Marston, players could jump back into the saddle as his son Jack a few years later as the whole world spirals toward ‘The Great War.’

The impact of his father’s death could lead Jack on a path of far more questionable morality; in the first game it felt wrong to go back on John’s newfound decency and so the player’s behaviour options became limited to what seemed right. As a wandering rebel there could be much greater scope for what Jack might do in a world in turmoil. Adding factions in the form of gangs and anti-military groups could form a political backbone for the game’s story, with Jack struggling to find his right path.

Gang warfare could lift straight out of GTA: San Andreas and help fill the West with conflict, and could even see the original’s online modes sculpted around Rockstar’s expansive GTA V mould. Imagine executing a great train robbery on horseback with a band of like-minded rebels, and you’re sure to be salivating for Red Dead Redemption 2!
