Okay, we’re treading deep into speculation territory with this one, but let’s recount why there is a shred – even if it is just a shred – of hope for Insomniac Games to bring back Resistance. It’s no secret that the creative dev needed a break from its intriguing, post-apocalyptic shooter, with CEO Ted Price effectively placing the PS exclusive on a shelf while Insomniac branched off for Fuse and, more recently, Sunset Overdrive.

Couple this with the fact that a Ratchet & Clank reimaging is in the works and the chances of a Resistance encore teeter on the edge of extinction. Still, what’s an E3 conference without a rabbit being pulled out of the hat at some point?

Let’s assume for a very brief moment that that rabbit – or should we say Chimera? – is either Resistance 4 or some form of reboot. Insomniac may have felt as though it all but wrapped but the cult franchise with the really rather excellent Resistance 3 in 2011, but there is a plethora of content still vying to be explored. The intriguing lore of the Cloven, Fyodor Malikov and the rich universe enveloped around Nathan Hale, Joseph Capelli and Co. enthralled the fanbase for years, and though much of the legend was told through hidden intel files, we want a fitting conclusion – sorry, Burning Skies.

Back in January, you may recall that Sony renewed the Resistance trademark, fuelling speculation that a reboot of sorts was in the works. It didn’t take long for the publisher to sweep any unsubstantiated speculation under the rug, but the community’s interest was piqued. Perhaps more so than anything else, it proved that there is still passionate fan base rallying around Insomniac’s PS exclusive series — even if the future of the series looks bleaker than Fall of Man’s rendition of London.
