It’s been a long time coming, but today publisher 2K finally confirmed that Mafia III is indeed real, and that the threequel is set for a worldwide premiere on August 5 at 5am PT/8am ET.

Promising a reveal trailer along with some gameplay information regarding Hangar 13’s long-awaited sequel, the announcement itself has been pegged for the eve of Gamescom, with the Cologne event due to kick-off the following day, August 6. According to 2K, those members of press in attendance will be able to get a look at an early build of Mafia III via a behind-closed-doors presentation, and here’s the official tease from the publisher.

Mafia 3 is the next installment in the popular series known for immersing players into a world of organized crime through rich narrative storytelling and a beautifully crafted game world featuring period-accurate cars, music and fashion.

Without any platforms confirmed nor a release window, there’s not an awful lot of information to go on at the time of writing. Then again, if last year’s casting call is anything to go by, Mafia III is likely to take place in and around Louisiana and/or New Orleans.

Originally in development at 2K Czech, it’s been said that the crime sequel was initially intended to be a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launch title, though production issues pushed the latest installment indefinitely. Thankfully, it looks as though the wait for new information is finally almost over.

Mafia III will be formally revealed on August 5 at 5am PT/8am ET, and we’ll have all the information for you right here.
