Two weeks on from its blistering debut, Overwatch has undeniably struck a chord with the shooter audience.

Not only has Blizzard championed its new IP as one of the most successful game launches in history, but the title has garnered a tremendous amount of goodwill from fans and critics alike – aided, in many respects, by the studio’s no-nonsense approach to cheaters.

But what of the possibility of adding cross-platform play to Overwatch? Well, according to Blizzard, it’s a feature that isn’t necessarily off the table, after it took to Twitter to note that the developers plan to “keep an eye” on the possibility of allowing PS4 and Xbox One players to fight together.

One thing that has been ruled out, however, is cross-platform play between PC and consoles, with Blizzard noting that those with a mouse and keyboard hold an unfair advantage over their console associates from purely a gameplay perspective. During the shooter’s reveal, the publisher noted that, “[Overwatch] is pretty fast-paced. It just felt like there was a little bit too much of an advantage. It just seems like the console crowd is going to love playing against the console people; the PC people will love playing against PC people.”

Overwatch is by no means the first multiplayer-centric title to flirt with the idea of cross-platform play between its systems, after Rocket League added the feature for Xbox One and PC players. But will Blizzard introduce the mechanic in the future? Time will tell.
