Recreating the first three classics in the franchise, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is a meeting of the past and present. The classic level design and charm of Naughty Dog’s iconic series are being fully re-created to take advantage of the PlayStation 4’s power, and from the footage shown off today, it certainly looks like they’ve done a good job so far.

In a post over on the PlayStation Blog, Vicarious Visions Game Director, Dan Tanguay, opened up about the development of the remaster. Utilizing some of the code behind the original three, he tells us that the studio were able to essentially recreate the games using modern technology. In their words, this is not so much a remake, as it is a remaster plus.

Besides rebuilding all of the cinematics, character designs and levels, the developer is also adding some new features for the N. Sane Trilogy. Time trials will be implemented in all three games, as well as a new menu system that unifies all of the information you need to know in one handy screen. Most importantly, though, a new checkpoint and save system is being created for the games. For those that have played through the original Crash Bandicoot, you’ll know how much of a blessing this is.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is currently slated to launch in 2017.
