For some the Sega Dreamcast was one of the greatest consoles they ever owned, myself included. Its online network alone caused me to sink an obscene amount of time into the likes of Phantasy Star and Quake 3 Arena. Despite the fact the console didn’t sell well, for those who loved the Dreamcast it has never truly died.
On Ebay sales of the console, peripherals and games have carried on long after the it went peacefully into the night which has not slipped past Sega’s attention. Now fan’s devotion have been rewarded (or smartly capitalised on depending how you look at it) with the announcement that Sega will be bringing a collection of Dreamcast games to the PS3 and XBOX 360.
Speaking to Game Informer, Sega’s executive vice president of sales and marketing Alan Pritchard unveiled Sega’s plans for the collection when quizzed on the chances of seeing a Dreamcast 2.
“The Dreamcast fans are very devoted. You see on eBay people are still buying the games and system. We actually have a Dreamcast collection coming out soon. We are looking to bring some of the old Dreamcast games to market digitally and packaged. The titles are still to be announced.” Pritchard revealed before adding “The Ultimate Genesis Collection did huge numbers on PS3 and 360, so it’s an important part of our business. We’ve already been releasing some Dreamcast games digitally; Crazy Taxi [for one].” Alas for fans there was some bad news as Alan Pritchard confirmed the company currently has no plans on developing a sequel to the Dreamcast “Unless there’s something I don’t know – no one has told me about getting back into the console business.”
A lot of great games did find a home on the Dreamcast but sadly never found the love they deserved at the time, titles like; Skies of Arcadia, Jet Grind Radio (Jet Set Radio) Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Grandia 2 and of course Shenmue 1 and 2. With plenty for Sega to choose from it will be interesting to see which games are given a second chance and to see how they fair now a days. Personally I’m begging for Skies of Arcadia and Jet Grind Radio to be re-released but what would you like to see? Let us know in the comments!
