#PS4NoDRM Begins Final Pre-E3 Push To Stop Xbox One And PS4 Used Game DRM

Shortly after Microsoft concluded the Kinect-powered, Live TV segment of their Xbox One reveal last month, company representatives began offering conflicting statements in regards to how the next-gen console would handle used games. Eventually, Microsoft's PR department began dodging the pre-owned question altogether by using a "we will tell you about it later" response, but that statement was quickly overshadowed by a disturbing report from MCV.

With both Microsoft and Sony expected to reveal specific details on how their next-gen consoles will handle used games at E3 next week, NeoGAF users are preparing to launch their next push to protect the rights of consumers to purchase, sell, lend, or give away pre-owned video games.

“Our understanding is that Sony has not made up their mind,” Dodd explained. “Phase two, starting Wednesday June 5th at 9am Eastern (1pm GMT), is just us giving Sony and Microsoft a gentle reminder that we are still here and we still know what we want.”

We asked Pete Dodd about his post-E3 plans for the campaign if either Sony or Microsoft detail systems designed to limit the used game market next week. As far as he is concerned, the campaign’s future will depend entirely on exactly what is announced at the event.

“Whether or not the campaign goes on will depend on whether we see an opening in their statements that makes it seem like we can affect change going forward… If they don’t detail their positions, I think people will feel deflated.” Dodd added, “Since we are paying customers I would hope that their goal wouldn’t be to do that.”

In his closing statement to us Dodd noted that although he personally kicked off the #PS4NoDRM and #XboxOneNoDRM movement, none of its success would have been possible without the support of the gaming community.

“I wish I could go and thank each individual person who contributed to this and done so with the utmost respect. Baller, PhD who easily has the best name on NeoGAF, has been hugely instrumental in helping get a central place for information with the PS4NoDRM website he created. GoFreak has been a wonderful leader in writing out the philosophies of our platform. We have a whole legion of guys scouring the web looking for news articles about it.”

“But the thing I’m most proud of is the gaming community… My feeling is that most people who play video games are in fact smart and mature adults. This campaign has been proof of that so far. The vast, vast majority of Tweets and posts have been very positive. There are a few flying off the handle and threatening Microsoft and Sony, but the majority of gamers who have participated thus far have been polite and smart. It’s those people that make me proud of my hobby.”

The #PS4NoDRM and #XboxOneNoDRM campaigns’ final pre-E3 push to protect consumer rights as they relate to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One physical video game media begins on Wednesday, June 5th at 8am EST/5am PST/1pm GMT. Anyone interested in finding out more information on how to get involved can do so in the NeoGAF thread or at the campaign’s official website.
