BioWare and EA released a new trailer today for one of the Jedi classes in their upcoming MMORPG: Star Wars: The Old Republic. It shows off the interesting Jedi Consular class option and gives players an idea of what to expect.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is the upcoming BioWare-developed MMORPG that is, of course, based in the Old Republic era of the Star Wars universe. For those of you unfamiliar with the Old Republic, it takes place thousands of years before the Skywalker clan plays their parts in the films. Set in a time when the Jedi are still strong and the Sith haven’t completely adopted the Rule of Two, the armies of both Jedi and Sith battle it out with one another drawing the galaxy into war.

One such class of Jedi in the fight is the Jedi Consular – formerly known as the Jedi Wizard. It’s a class that focuses on wisdom, study and diplomacy as a means of handling situations, although they still dish out plenty of damage with the use of dual-bladed lightsabers. Players will be able to choose either the path of the “silent hand of the Council” as a Shadow or they can serve as healers and empower allies as the Sage as they progress. To see the Consular in action check out the trailer.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Old Republic era, Dark Horse Comics has a few comic series based during the time of the game as well as the book Star Wars: The Old Republic – Fatal Alliance from Sean Williams.

As a fan of Star Wars, especially during the Old Republic era, this is one MMORPG that I’m really looking forward to. The Old Republic is a whole new era that doesn’t require a Skywalker to play a key role, making it great for fans to see new heroes and villains rise or fall.
