It’s been a heck of a week for Star Wars fans. Not only did Disney pull back the curtain on Episode IX – which has officially been named The Rise of Skywalker – but Electronic Arts has given gamers a glimpse of what to expect with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Being developed by Respawn Entertainment (of Apex Legends fame), details are scarce regarding the new game’s direction, though a few key details have come to light leading up to the Fallen Order’s initial reveal, which is set to take place later today at Star Wars Celebration.
Earlier this week, fans got their first taste of the game’s direction and setting thanks to a leaked poster, which shows off a lone Jedi (or Sith) on a cliffside, lightsaber in hand. Another leak, originating from gaming forum ResetEra, hints that Fallen Order will feature slower-paced gameplay that’s comparable to Dark Souls, complete with swordplay and parrying systems. It’s worth noting that these leaks are unconfirmed, so it’s best to wait until Respawn Entertainment unveils Fallen Order before jumping to any conclusions.
That being said, one of the game’s narrative designers has shed some light on the attention being paid to Fallen Order’s story. As reported by ComicBook.com, Chris Avellone – who has worked on classic series including Fallout and Neverwinter Nights – explained that story is “very important” to Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts.
“I hope [the six writers] are listed in the reveal because I accidentally said ‘I’ve wrapped this up’, but there are other writers and I’m not even the lead guy. Story was very important to Respawn. I think they do a good job of introducing various narrative layers into their games already, but they think story is an important part of what they perceive to be a Star Warsgame. That’s one of the reasons I like Respawn, because when they tackle something like that, they understand what the important points are.”
The development team has remained silent when it comes to Fallen Order’s story, but from what we understand, it’ll be set five years after Revenge of the Sith. The game will follow a Padawan named Cal, “who survived Order 66 and is being mentored by a woman named Ceres.” Beyond that, we don’t know much else, but all that’s set to change when Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is revealed later today.
