Techland (the developers behind the buggy, but enjoyable, Dead Island) has announced that the “Project Hell” game they revealed last August will be released for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 sometime later this year under the title Hellraid.

Described as a “first-person co-op slasher that offers two games in one: a single-player, story-driven campaign of hack & slash action; and unique, co-operative [4-player] multiplayer,” Hellraid features a unique combat system that combines “elements of hack & slash RPGs, first-person shooters and online multiplayer games.” The game’s combat system consists of melee, ranged, and magical weapon attacks, that rely on timing rather than button mashing for success. Hellraid started its development life as a weapon mod for the original Dead Island, so that should give you some idea as to how the basics of melee combat will work.

While the single-player game is the main attraction on display in Hellraid, the title also includes a “Game Master system” for the multiplayer mode that has a player in charge of loot drops, enemy placement, and generating random online challenges. The studio has not yet fully detailed this aspect of the game, but it sounds similar to the AI director in Left 4 Dead.

Techland has promised to provide more information on Hellraid in the coming weeks, in the meantime make sure to check out the first screenshots for the first-person hack & slash in the gallery below.

Full press release:

Techland officially unveils the game formerly known as Project Hell, blending story-driven hack & slash action, shooters and online multiplayer in one hell-raising package.

Techland has formally announced Hellraid, a first-person co-op slasher that offers two games in one: a single-player, story-driven campaign of hack & slash action; and unique, co-operative multiplayer that pits four players against the denizens of hell – and each other – in a battle for points, rewards and fame. The first official screenshots, game details and more are available on Hellraid.com, where you’ll also find the developers blog, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the production of Hellraid.

The armies of Hell brought pain and destruction to the realm of man, and only a select few have the fighting skills necessary to confront the devilish monstrosities. Combining elements of hack & slash RPGs, first-person shooters and online multiplayer games, Hellraid features an advanced, immersive combat system with melee, ranged and magical weapons. The engaging Game Master system makes each game a different experience, placing loot and enemies while generating random online challenges.

With exploration, looting, questing, weapon crafting, boss fights, armor customization, character development, leaderboards, magic and so much more, Hellraid is set to drag you straight to hell later this year on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
