People often forget how important directors are. When a blockbuster succeeds, the praise of the general public tends to fall on the actors or storyline. With Marvel’s Doctor Strange on the horizon, it’s only a matter of time before DC give their own resident spell caster a film of his own, but this won’t be an easy proposition. The character has always been portrayed as quite offbeat in the comics, fighting against evil forces using a vast array of unusual magical powers.

If you need a filmmaker who can make strange subject matter surprisingly accessible, look no further than Darren Aronofsky. The Academy Award-winning film Black Swan played around with ideas of perception and the fragility of the human psyche while The Fountain, meanwhile, proved that Aronofsky has a penchant for epic filmmaking and lush visuals. What else would you need from a Doctor Fate movie?

Aside from a cheesy appearance on Smallville and a glimpse of his helmet in Constantine, Doctor Fate has barely made an impact in live adaptations of the DC universe, but the character has huge potential to work in a mature R rated movie.

Also, every time Fate uses his magic, the energy manifests itself in the shape of Egyptian hieroglyphs – which would look cool AF on the big screen. Just saying.
