9 Comic Book Characters That Are Funnier Than Deadpool

After the gigantic success of 2016's Deadpool, everyone's a Wade Wilson fan all of sudden. Yeah, the character's a humorous fella, but for the love of Aunt May's floral curtains and gingerbread cookies, he isn't the Michael Jordan of comic book funnymen. You see, the Merc with a Mouth is like the loud, obnoxious clown in your high school class. He made you laugh and clap at all the hilarity he caused back then, but years later, you shake your head at the special kind of stupid he actually was. It's like re-watching Adam Sandler's filmography in 2017 and expecting to enjoy it - or even chuckle. In an effort to prove that there are funnier comic book characters than the big D to the Pool, we've tracked down a group of the comedic hard-hitters. Much like comedy, though, their approaches differ and not everyone will rely on fart jokes or slapstick shticks to get their point across. Some of them prefer the art of subtlety - something that's obviously a foreign concept to Wade. As always, we invite your opinion on this topic. Spider-Man As long as it isn't the Tobey Maguire version of Spider-Man, who was about as funny as a Norwegian mushroom, the Web-Head is quite the comedian. From his nervy quips during combat to his overall self-deprecating nature, Spidey isn't afraid of putting his radioactive sense of humor to good use. If you think about it, anyone who'd actively choose to wear his first homemade suit in public must be a bona-fide prankster. Imagine stepping into a ring to fight an opponent who looked like he'd bought a superhero outfit from the bargain bin at Walmart? Sure, this was how every WWE wrestler dressed throughout the 90s (remember Doink the Clown?), but man, it's hard to take any of it seriously. With Spider-Man: Homecoming around the corner, the scene is set for Peter Parker to bring the laughs and calamity with him once again. But our Spidey Sense is tingling here. Judging by the marketing (especially that poster), there's a good chance that this might turn into the Tony Stark/Iron Man show. Speaking of which… Iron Man If you're looking for someone whose biggest personality traits are irony and sarcasm, there's no one else with an equally sharp mind and tongue quite like Tony Stark, AKA Marvel's Tin Man. At times, his snark and witty retorts do piss off the odd teammate or twenty-two, but that's their problem, not ours. We can just sit back and enjoy the soul-crushing quips. Is he drop-down-on-the-floor-with-the-giggles kind of hilarious? Absolutely not. But we like to think of him as the Louis C.K. to Deadpool's Chris Rock. Not every joke needs to result in a grand guffaw since there's still a place for the hearty chuckle, right? Ever since Robert Downey Jr. put on the Iron Man suit, the hero's popularity has skyrocketed, with an obvious synergy and personality transference between actor and character. As the two feed off each other in an excellent way, we end up being the real winners here. I mean, who wouldn't want some Stark sarcasm in their life? Lobo If Deadpool is Marvel's resident break-the-fourth-waller, then Lobo is DC's main man (see what I did there?). Not only is the character's entire being based on a pastiche of comic book tough guys, but his self-awareness often leads to hilarious monologues and situations. For those of us who prefer our humor as dark as Rick and Morty, there's no one who gets us snorting and chortling like Lobo does. Yeah, he might be a super douche in the same league as Kanye West, but that's part of his charm. You just can't take the Czarnian's threats seriously, even though you know that he'll probably blow your head off. Years ago, there were rumors that Dwayne Johnson was in negotiations to portray Lobo, and it seems like a real missed opportunity in hindsight. When the most electrifying man in sports entertainment wants to play the most fraggin' funnyman in comic books, you let him do it, sit back, and count the influx of dollars afterwards. Nightwing Holy laughing gas, Batman! From his early days as the Dark Knight's protégé to his current incarnation as Blüdhaven's not-so-silent protector, Dick Grayson has always had a pun for every occasion. Let's not forget the amount of "Dick" jokes we've been subjected to over the years due to him inexplicably refusing to be called Richard. Much like Spidey, Nightwing is also a jabberer during battle, choosing to provide audio commentary as he flips from side to side and breaks a few jaws in the process. He might have a serious streak when necessary (blame that one on the Batman), but he certainly isn't averse to turning up the heat and leaving some sick burns as well. In fact, he's quite the troll, putting some of our more hateful commentators to shame. Watching his interactions with Bruce Wayne are almost always entertaining, as Dick pokes fun at his legal guardian's stoic nature and demeanor. They might be similar in many ways and hold the same strong values, but it's good to see that the former Boy Wonder inherited Alfred's sense of humor and not Bruce's. The Joker Oh, please, are you telling me that the Joker isn't the funniest character in the whole comic book world? I mean, he has the word 'joke' in his name, so that says enough. Also, Mark Hamill has voiced him countless times; thus, this makes him instantly superior to anyone else purely for that reason alone. From "The Laughing Fish" to "Joker's Favor," there's a host of tales that feature the psychopath's more humorous side. Of course he pushes the boundaries of moral decency and probably wouldn't be anyone's first choice as a dinner guest, but at least he isn't afraid to smile and have a good laugh every few minutes. Couldn't we all learn a valuable lesson from that? Undoubtedly, one of the Joker's funniest moments came from The New Batman Adventures. After inheriting millions of dollars and discovering it was all fake, the Clown Prince of Crime proudly declares, "I'm crazy enough to take on Batman, but the IRS? No, thank you." Now, that's comedy! Wolverine When you think of Wolverine, you wouldn't exactly think of the word 'funny,' now would you? Well, you're wrong. Wolvie is one heck of a comedian. In fact, some of his best moments have involved his team-ups with Deadpool, where the two Canadians have put on a comedy show of note - namely when Logan threatens to stab him repeatedly. Venturing into the deadpan territory, the ol' Canucklehead doesn't miss the opportunity to pass a stinging remark or droll observation, either. His exchanges with the boring Scott Summers, AKA Cyclops, have become rather legendary, as he cuts even deeper than his claws ever could. And when he's in the mood, he also makes sure the villains know just how useless they are with a berserker barrage of creative insults. There's a reason that everyone wants to see Wolverine and Deadpool in a film together (X-Men Origins: Wolverine doesn't count). Ryan Reynolds might think he's got the leg up here in the comedy department, but we're certain that Hugh Jackman could give him a run for his money. Beast Boy If you've been following our lists, you're well aware of how much we dig Garfield Logan, AKA Beast Boy. So, it should come as no surprise that he'd find his way onto this one as well. And he's here on merit, too, we'll have you know. As a fun-loving prankster, Beastie loves to lighten up the mood and make everyone smile with his endless gags. Unfortunately, some of the sour members of the Teen Titans don't always appreciate his jovial nature, but no one cares about the opinions of a couple of salty crackers. They're just a bunch of hormonal teenagers trying to act like grownups. How lame! As DC continues to proclaim its film universe will be less dark and gritty, there's a need for characters like Beast Boy to be introduced in the continuity. With his humor and affinity for the wild and whacky, he could prove to be DC's breakout comedy star. LEGO Batman While his more slightly canon counterpart is a super-serious, glum chum, the Brick Knight is everyone's favorite one-line-dropping superhero. After all, name me one person who didn't laugh when the password to the Batcave was revealed to be "Iron Man sucks" in The LEGO Batman Movie? Okay, maybe Robert Downey Jr. and Kevin Feige didn't appreciate it so much. You see, Deadpool is in-your-face funny, while LEGO Batman prefers the tongue-in-cheek approach. Humor shouldn't always be a case of "look at how funny this is because I'm telling you"; it should be "this is funny because it actually is." And this is what the Caped Crusader brings to the party in his snaptastic adventures. With tons of references and a complete self-unawareness, LEGO Batman rocks the comedy as hard as he does the beatdowns. He's not only capable of smacking them with batarangs, but he's equally adept at dropping them with his gags, too. Rocket Raccoon Okay, you got us. Rocket's cuteness as a furry creature instantly makes him more endearing to us. But you can't deny that he's a sharpshooter with both guns and jokes, and we love him for it. While Groot is the heart of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket remains its soul, influencing missions with his quirks and mad mannerisms. Sure, his jokes can be lame at times, but whose aren't? You can't help but laugh along with him even when you don't know why. Considering his best friend is a tree, he has to branch out (sorry not sorry for that bad pun) and be the funny one here. It's safe to say he's succeeded in his role. In fact, given the choice to watch Rocket or Deadpool as a stand-up act, we'd have to go with the furry marksman over the wisecracking humorist any day.
