9 Female Superheroes That Should Get Their Own Films

The hype for Wonder Woman is real. Not only is it an important film for the DCEU, but it's also a pivotal point for future female superheroes on the big screen. If it does well, we could be receiving even more female-led blockbusters. If not, well, you know how Hollywood works. Hopefully, come June 2nd, we'll be discussing the beginning of a new era of superheroines and not the latter. For too long, women have been getting the short end of the stick when it comes to comic book movies. Either the characters are shoehorned in as romantic interests, or the filmmakers show their complete disinterest in the project and dump a monumental turd in our laps (cough, Catwoman, cough). Well, it's time for us to put our foot down and say enough is enough now; studios need to take these characters seriously once and for all. In an attempt to make their lives easier, we've gone through the pages of our favorite comic books and identified the nine female superheroes that we believe should get their own solo films. As always, these things are rather subjective, so you're welcome to give us your thoughts on who should and who shouldn't be on the list. Just drop us a comment below. Before we begin, though, here are some honorable mentions: Hawkgirl Power Girl She-Hulk Wasp Storm Without further ado, this is all about the ladies here, so let's celebrate girl power on the next page. Huntress If the DCEU is considering a big-screen competitor to rival the Punisher, Huntress is a real and possible solution. A film starring Helena Bertinelli could go a long way in breaking the numerous stereotypes about female superheroes and actually give us a heroine who isn't afraid to cross moral lines to get the job done. As it stands, her origin and history with her mobster father makes for the perfect tale about vengeance and bloodlust. Throw in her lukewarm relationship with Batman and the GCPD, and there's a real chance to explore what happens when vigilantes clash over ideals and methods. There's your first draft right there, DC. We've seen enough comic book movies where the heroes ultimately do the right thing and follow the path of righteousness and all the goody two-shoes stuff. So, maybe it's time that we see a proper film where they show no mercy to those scumbag criminals. X-23 After the massive success of Logan, an X-23 film is simply a must-happen event. Whether we see the phenomenal Dafne Keen carry on as the character, or an older actress cast as Laura Kinney in a future X-Men adventure, it's safe to say that X-23 is now an important part of this franchise's universe. As we become acclimatized to a post-Wolverine world, the time's right to strike and cement X-23 as a formidable and pivotal character. We all know that Wolverine won't stay dead for too long and it's only a matter of time before the role is recast again, but at least let FOX have some fun with a different, but equally awesome, character in the interim. Considering Laura's history of being a clone, this also presents filmmakers with the intriguing possibility of finally introducing the fan-favorite, gene-splicing villain as her main antagonist. Yip, you guessed it. We're talking about none other than Mister Sinister. Black Widow Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow has played such a pivotal role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, but there's yet to be a solo film to celebrate her badassery. Quite frankly, Marvel has pussyfooted around the topic and not provided a straightforward answer to this conundrum. If she's good enough for the Avengers, she should have her own movie. No excuses. Iron Man has had three films, as has Captain America. Thor is about to receive his third, and we received two Hulk flicks that none of us cared for. So, why's Black Widow been on the fringes? Something's gotta give here. Instead of tossing Natasha Romanova between the male heroes as if she's a hot pepper steak pie, it's time that Kevin Feige and his people give her the film outing that she deserves. She's proven her worth on more than one occasion, so let's pull the trigger on this one now. Black Canary We've touched upon this before in previous articles, but Arrow really doesn't do the Black Canary any justice. When you consider how remarkably powerful Dinah Lance is in the comic books, you'll realize that she could beat the pulp out of most of the DC universe without breaking a sweat. She's just that good. If Geoff Johns and friends aren't planning a Birds of Prey TV series or film, then they should jump at the opportunity to give Black Canary her own solo excursion. As a character that combines strength, intelligence, and beauty into a fearsome total package, she has everything necessary to pack the theatres and get social media buzzing. Heck, while we're at it, let's give Katheryn Winnick the role that she's desperate for, since she'd certainly make a terrific Canary. Sure, there are a significant amount of people clamoring for a Green Arrow film, but we'd much rather prefer one about his longterm partner, Dinah. C'mon, let's give the DCEU a chance to do the Canary Cry right, because the character deserves so much more than the power poodle yelp featured on Arrow. Batwoman If you've been reading James Tynion IV's Detective Comics run, you would've undoubtedly noticed how much attention he's given Kate Kane in the book. She's been put in charge of the Bat Family and leads as Batman's second-in-command, acting as a mentor to the team and guiding them in training for battles. Considering the above coupled with her own solo series and soaring popularity over the years, we don't believe in coincidences. DC is grooming Batwoman for something major - and a film looks more than likely at this point. As a proud LGBT character, she's also the diversity and representation that the DCEU requires. Not to mention, she's got the fighting acumen and intelligence to match Batman on any given day. The chances of Batwoman making it into production, though, rest on the possible success of Joss Whedon's Batgirl. If that film proves to be a runaway hit, there's no doubt that this one will be green lit in due course. We're holding thumbs that it happens for all our sake. Squirrel Girl The adorable Squirrel Girl is a character that's experienced a surprising resurgence in popularity over the last couple of years, even earning herself a solo comic book series. It's like the world has gone nuts over her all of a sudden (sorry, that was an unnecessary pun). As she makes her way into more and more of Marvel's storylines, we can't rule out the possibility of her making her live-action debut soon. Hit the Internet and you'll find many commentators mooting the idea of Anna Kendrick as Doreen Green, and we tend to agree with them. If this casting ever happens, it'll be a match made in heaven. There are a lot of pressures associated with A-list comic book characters coming to the big screen, but it tends to be less risky with lesser-known properties. A low-to-medium-budget Squirrel Girl film could be a surprise sleeper hit for Marvel, in the same way that Guardians of the Galaxy was. If anything, it'll at least be a fun ride for the audience. Jean Grey Well, every X-Men film ends up being about Jean Grey and Wolverine anyway, so why not just give her own movie now? She's undoubtedly the most powerful mutant around and extremely popular among the fans; therefore, it's a given that any Jean Grey-led event will be surefire hit at the box office. It's a no-brainer, really. With Sophie Turner becoming Hollywood's latest darling, the filmmakers also have the star power necessary to pull the non-comic book audiences to this movie. Her schedule should free up after Game of Thrones comes to an end in the next year or two as well, so all that FOX has to do is tie her down to a deal as quickly as possible. The question is, though, will a solo film be necessary since we're already receiving X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which is essentially a Jean Grey story, in 2018? We think so. It could be the start of a live-action Phoenix saga that we actually want to see. Spider-Woman If Silver Sable and Black Cat can be included in Sony's proposed Spiderverse, then surely a Spider-Woman film can be, too. Yes, we know that she's pretty much seen as just the female version of Spider-Man, but you'd be writing off a well-rounded character that's been part of Marvel Comics for four decades now. There are several versions of the character around; however, Jessica Drew still stands out as the one true Spider-Woman among all the pretenders. Knowing Sony, though, it wouldn't surprise us if they cast Aunt May in the role and make her battle against a bug-spray company or something. So, maybe, it would be better if this idea is best left in Marvel's hands. Nonetheless, a Spider-Woman film could open the door for the rest of Spidey's amazing friends to find their way into our lives. Who wouldn't want to see the ultimate team-up movie starring the Wall-Crawler and his arachnid-inspired mates? It would be radioactively radical! Vixen Vixen has received a bit of love on Arrow and The CW in recent times, and she's also been given a starring role in Steve Orlando's Justice League of America series. However, that simply doesn't feel enough for this character that possesses the powers of the animal kingdom. It's simple: animals rule, so Vixen rules, too. As her popularity burgeons, undoubtedly so do the voices demanding for a solo film. She's been around since 1982, so there's enough history to find a riveting storyline to adapt to the big screen. Whether it be from her animated series or even the Justice League of America storylines, there's no shortage of inspiration in her source material. In terms of casting Vixen, Megalyn Echikunwoke has done a superb job in both live-action and voice roles, so she should be the natural choice for the character's movie adventures. If the filmmakers do decide to go with someone else, however, our money's on The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira or Sonequa Martin-Green. Either of them would kill it as Vixen.
