With legacy sequels continuing to be all the rage, the comic book adaptation remaining Hollywood’s most consistently popular and bankable genre, and Keanu Reeves carrying on his ageless stint as one of the most beloved and iconic action heroes the industry has ever seen, there was always the chance of a Constantine sequel simmering quietly in the background.
Of course, it’s been almost 20 years since Francis Lawrence’s first installment arrived and took home $231 million at the box office, a respectable number for an R-rated superhero story based on a character the majority of general audiences weren’t familiar with. Reeves loves the occult detective deeply and refused to give up hope of reprising the role, but we still don’t have a clue whether or not it’s actually going to happen.
A second chapter was officially confirmed to be in active development last year, but James Gunn and Peter Safran being appointed co-CEOs of DC Studios has muddied the waters. Reeves has admitted he’s spoken to the Guardians of the Galaxy architect about the project, but neither of them have gone so far as to reveal with the utmost certainty whether or not it’s still on the cards.
On the plus side, Constantine‘s enduring legacy has been cemented yet again after the 2005 cult favorite emerged from the underworld to become one of the top-viewed titles on Prime Video’s global charts, per FlixPatrol. There’s definitely an audience out there for more, and John Wick has proven beyond doubt Keanu kicking ass is must-see cinema, but the ball remains in Gunn’s court for now, although he’s shown so signs of whether or not he’s willing to pick it up or drop it altogether.
