A psychological thriller stuffed with future stars that flopped hard finds fresh prestige on the streaming Top 10

They've done alright for themselves.

It’s always fascinating to revisit an older movie boasting a cast packed full of recognizable stars at the very beginning of their careers, even if 2002’s psychological thriller Abandon was an unmitigated disaster at the time of its release.

Marking the feature-length directorial debut of Stephen Gaghan – who’d just won an Academy Award for penning Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic and would earn another nomination for his work pulling double duty on Syriana – the $25 million tale couldn’t even recoup half of its production costs at the box office.

Further salt was rubbed into the wound by way of a miserable 16 percent Rotten Tomatoes, with upwards of 10,000 votes failing to push Abandon‘s audience approval rating beyond 31 percent. That being said, the 21 year-old critical and commercial flop has somehow wormed its way back into the consciousness by ending up as one of the Top 10 most-watched titles on Hulu, per FlixPatrol.

Boasting Katie Holmes, Charlie Hunnam, Gabrielle Union, Zooey Deschanel and more among its number, the plot takes place at one of the country’s most prestigious universities. As Holmes’ senior struggles to cope with the disappearance of her first love two years prior, the ongoing investigation throws up personal, romantic, and academic struggles that seem to stumble from one bombshell to the next.

Besides the novelty of seeing fresh-faced versions of stars you recognize, there isn’t a whole lot to recommend about Abandon. Either way, Hulu’s customer base doesn’t seem to care in the slightest based on its upward trajectory.
