It goes without saying that the entire entertainment industry was ravaged beyond recognition by the onset of the pandemic, with so many top-tier movies being buried, lost, forgotten, or abandoned as a result. One of the biggest casualties – at least if we’re talking in terms of sheer quality – was director Michael Matthews’ Love and Monsters.
Set for a theatrical release in March of 2020 – also known as the month the entire world was brought to a standstill – the whimsical creature feature was pushed back by a month, and then to February of 2021, before ultimately being shuffled straight onto VOD in October 2020, while international audiences had to wait even longer after Netflix scooped up the overseas distribution rights.
With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 94 percent to go along with an 89 percent audience approval rating, Love and Monsters had the potential to be a massive hit at the box office, one that could potentially launch a money-spinning franchise. Sadly, that didn’t happen, but the good news is that the acclaimed adventure keeps inching towards certifiable classic status.
As much as a reputation for being the best movie not enough people have seen counts as a badge of honor, a first-time viewer took to Reddit to admit they’d been completely blown away by Love and Monsters, a sentiment that was echoed throughout the comments and replies.
It deserved better, but longevity as an unsung masterpiece of the apocalyptic arena will have to be a suitable compromise, and it’s an entirely deserved moniker.
