A twisted spin on a classic tale escapes from captivity to turns the tables on its streaming pursuers

You've seen many versions of this story before.

There’s an old theory that states there are only a handful of stories to have ever been told; it’s just the way people choose to interpret them that makes each individual take stand out from the crowd. Whether or not you buy into that is entirely up to you, but grisly action thriller Hunt Club is clearly a spin on one of the most heavily-adapted tales of all-time regardless.

Director Elizabeth Blake-Thomas’ isolated nail-biter revolves around a group of misogynistic men who lure women to a remote island with the offer of a $100,000 cash prize on offer, only for the unwitting and unwilling females to discover that they’ve been brought over to be hunted down and killed for sport in a twisted game.

It doesn’t take a genius to join the dots between Hunt Club and The Most Dangerous Game, which has been brought to the screen dozens of times over in various capacities covering almost every genre. In fact, Casper Van Dien stars in both Hunt Club and another remake of the original text, while Christoph Waltz has been headlining his own iteration that was recently renewed for a second season.

This one might just be the gnarliest of the lot, though, especially when Mena Suvari’s Cassandra decides to the best way to survive is by turning the tables, leading to all-out war between the men and women. An 88 percent audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes hints that Hunt Club might be better than you’re expecting, while FlixPatrol naming it as one of the most-watched features on Google Play Movies indicates that it’s drawing in an audience on-demand, too.
