According to Deadline, Abbie Cornish has been offered the lead female role in the RoboCop remake. Her film appearances have mostly been small or supporting roles lately (Limitless, Sucker Punch, A Good Year) so this is a pretty big break for the actress.

She joins Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) and Samuel L. Jackson in the highly anticipated flick. Behind the camera is Jose Padilha, who may not be that well known in North America, but has had success overseas with his Elite Squad films as well as his documentary Bus 174, which I highly recommend.

MGM is showing a lot of faith by giving RoboCop a coveted Summer time release of August 9th 2013 but judging by the talent involved, I think they can deliver.

Ironically, with this news breaking today as well as the first teaser poster of Dredd being released, is a rise of violent futuristic cop remakes on the rise? Perhaps we can finally get that long awaited Demolition Man remake starring Michael Fassbender.
