His directing career may have taken a serious blow with the travesty that was Winter’s Tale, but Akiva Goldsman is still killing it in Hollywood as a writer and producer. He recently did a rewrite of the next Divergent film, titled Insurgent, and upcoming projects that he’s producing include Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur series starter and a planned follow-up to I Am Legend. Now, it appears that Goldsman is going back to the horror genre (he exec-produced the first three Paranormal Activity entries) for his next gig – rewriting Paramount’s The Ring 3D.
Like the first two films, The Ring 3D will find Samara returning to strike terror into the hearts of many with her haunted video tape. F. Javier Gutiérrez, the Spanish filmmaker behind Before the Fall, is set to direct. If he strikes a deal with Paramount, Goldsman will be rewriting a script originally by David Loucka (Dream House, House at the End of the Street).
Goldsman, an Oscar-winning scribe for A Beautiful Mind, already has exposure to the horror genre outside of exec-producing Paranormal Activity. His next directorial venture, Stephanie, is a Blumhouse thriller about orphaned young girl with unworldly powers who is taken in by a man and woman who claim to be her parents.
It’s currently unclear whether Naomi Watts will be returning to topline The Ring 3D. It’s been rumored that the film will be a prequel, but nothing has been officially announced about the story or characters. As always though, we’ll keep you posted as more on the project emerges.
