The 2019 Shazam! movie showed how this superhero film was part of the DCU with the appearance of Superman. And with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, it needed to show that this superhero is still part of this connected universe before the pending reboot and possibly the Flashpoint event that will happen in The Flash.
But this epic sequel can’t just have one DC cameo. With new characters introduced since the first film, it made sense if some of them appeared in this follow-up film about a young boy questioning if he’s worthy to be a superhero. And DC didn’t disappoint since the film provided more than one cameo. Some of them played a role in the film’s narrative, while others are just there to be easter eggs for the fans to find.
So in case you’ve missed it, here are all the cameos that appeared in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Wonder Woman
It’s not a DC film without a huge cameo from someone from the Justice League. If the first Shazam! movie featured a headless cameo from Superman, the sequel stepped up and gave a full Gal Gadot appearance as Wonder Woman. This Amazonian woman first appeared in Billy’s dreams when he went on a date with her in Paris, albeit, it looked like a faceless cameo as well, only for it to be interrupted by The Wizard so he could warn him about the Daughters of Atlas.
The second appearance was at the end of the film during Shazam!’s funeral. Diana made her way to Mount Olympus to reignite the staff that gave Shazam! his powers and bringing this young hero back to life. While it was teased that they might meet again, Wonder Woman tells Billy as she leaves to “stick with saving the world.”
Mr. Mind and Dr. Sivana
Another DC cameo that made their return to Shazam! Fury of the Gods are Mr. Mind and Dr. Sivana. Both characters were part of the first film since Sivana was Shazam!’s, first enemy. Meanwhile, Mr. Mind appeared during the Shazam!’s end credit scene where he visits Sivana in prison, promising him that there are other ways to obtain magic.
However, in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, their appearance was inconsequential. Literally, nothing develops since we last saw them in 2019, with Sivana only growing a beard and yelling to the talking slug that he’s been trapped in prison for “two whole years.” The slug promises that he has something conjuring but just leaves the captured inventor alone in his prison once more.
Emilia Harcourt and John Economos
After Shazam! managed to prove himself as a superhero in the second film and was deemed worthy to be seen as a God by Hesperia, one of the Daughters of Atlas, it caught Amanda Waller’s attention and sent Emilia Harcourt and John Economos to look for him. Both characters appeared in DC’s Peacemaker series, The Suicide Squad, and Black Adam, so you know they’re qualified when dealing with superpowered beings.
Harcourt and Economos were tasked to invite Shazam! to the Justice Society of America, which he immediately accepts due to him mistaking it for the Justice League. Regardless, he’s now part of a superhero team, just not the one where Wonder Woman is at.
The 1974s Shazam
Lastly, Zachary Levi isn’t the only Shazam! that appeared in the DC sequel. Micahel Gray, the actor who played Shazam! back in the 1970s, had a small cameo appearance in the film as a fun easter egg for those who grew up with the franchise. In case you might have missed him, he wore a red and yellow T-shirt around when Shazam! was fighting Kalypso and her dragon in the middle of the street, along with other Shazam! supporters who were misnaming the superhero. It may not have been the multiversal visit that people were hoping for but it was a fun surprise nevertheless.
The DCU has introduced a lot of characters throughout the years. And sadly, with the pending reboot that’s bound to happen, it’s unlikely that we’re going to see these characters again. So it’s great to see these new and upcoming DC films bringing back previous characters into these titles, just so we can see them for one last time before Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters begin to tell its story.
