No offense intended to Ruby Rose, but based on the statistics, she either needs to abandon her dreams of becoming an action hero or find better projects to star in, with Vanquish marking the nadir of a consistently unsuccessful sideline.
SAS: Red Notice, The Doorman, 1UP, and Stowaway were all trashed by critics, but the five percent Rotten Tomatoes rating accrued by this one takes the biscuit. It’s fully deserved, too, and leaves you wondering if Morgan Freeman is strapped for cash or something, with such an interminable exercise in by-the-numbers action surely beneath such a titan of the silver screen.
The Academy Award-winning legend plays a retired cop that’s hired Rose’s former drug courier to do his bidding, forcing her to ferry dangerous cargo from one potentially deadly situation to the next by holding her daughter hostage and using the child as leverage to ensure she doesn’t break ranks.
Needless to say, she does eventually, and there isn’t a single surprise to be discovered along the way. Despite being terrible on every level, though, Vanquish has once again proved its mettle on streaming by ending up as one of the Top 10 most-watched features among Netflix subscribers in the United States, per FlixPatrol.
Once more, it’s been proven that no matter how bad reviews for any given movie are, running and gunning is always going to be deemed worthy of 90-minute investment by subscribers to the market-leading streaming service. Rose has shown that she’s capable of much better within the genre, but it would be nice of her to achieve that potential more often.
