Who’s going to die in Avengers: Infinity War? That’s the question on every Marvel fan’s lips going into the event movie of the year. We’ve heard time and time again that no one is safe now that the final chapter of the first decade of the MCU is kicking off and folks have been furiously speculating over which of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes might be on the endangered list.

One Avenger it appears we can guarantee will make it through though is Sam Wilson AKA Falcon. While speaking hypothetically, Anthony Mackie said he thinks his character will be “totally safe” in Infinity War as he has his handy mechanized wings that allow him to fly above the heat of the battle when things get tough.

“I think Falcon falls into ‘you’re totally safe,’ because I fly. So the fact that I fly puts me above all the danger. So I can just grab Cap and get outta there, whereas if you’re the Winter Soldier, you’re done for, man. You’re in the thick of it, there’s no way outta that.”

If we’re to take this as confirmation that Sam Wilson will survive Infinity War, then does this mean that Winter Soldier won’t and will meet his end while fighting Thanos’ goons in the movie? Well, probably not, as it’s more than likely that Mackie is just mocking his pal Sebastian Stan’s character, much as Sam does to Bucky in the films themselves.

In fact, both heroes are expected to survive into Phase Four. Particularly, that is, if the MCU is going to broadly follow the characters’ comic book trajectory. On the page, both of Steve Rogers’ best pals go on to take on the mantle of Captain America at separate times. Seeing as Chris Evans has suggested that he’s done with the role after Avengers 4, this looks likely to happen on the big screen, too. Mostly, the betting is on Bucky becoming the next Cap.

Then again, if that turns out to be the case, then perhaps Falcon’s expendable, after all and maybe Mackie’s just playing us? We’ll find out for sure when Avengers: Infinity War arrives in cinemas on April 27th.
