In the wake of the Disney/Fox deal, Marvel fans have offered an abundance of suggestions on who the next Wolverine might be, from Keanu Reeves to Tom Hardy. And thanks to some recent comments from Jason Momoa of Aquaman fame, it seems that the internet now has one more name to bring into the conversation.

Having starred last year in the DCEU’s biggest hit to date, Momoa is hardly starved for work in the field of superhero cinema. All the same, at this weekend’s Celebrity Fan Fest, the actor reportedly mentioned that if he were to play any role in the MCU, it would be Wolverine. And while it sounds like Momoa’s remark was purely hypothetical, his statement will no doubt inspire yet another wave of debate and fan art around the character that Hugh Jackman made his own for seventeen years.

Regardless, we could be in for a long wait before the next version of Wolverine makes his big screen debut. Though the Disney/Fox deal closed back in March, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has since told io9 that it will be “a very long time” before any X-Men appear in the MCU, explaining that Marvel’s next five years had been planned out before the merger was finalized. And given the disastrous box office performance of the recent Dark Phoenix, it probably wouldn’t be the worst idea to let the property hibernate for a while.

As for Momoa, the star’s next confirmed superhero outing is Aquaman 2, though the film isn’t scheduled for release until December 16th, 2022. In the meantime, you can catch the actor in Denis Villeneuve’s star-studded Dune reboot, which is headed for cinemas on November 20th, 2020.
