Not long ago, we not only got the great news that Joss Whedon would be returning to direct the sequel to his smash hit The Avengers, but we also heard that he signed a contract with Marvel that will go through June 2015. It didn’t take long for people to put two and two together to figure out how long we’d have to wait to see The Avengers 2.
Now we have word from Deadline that the release date has been set for May 1, 2015, as many already expected. That will give Whedon a little under three years to write and direct what will hopefully be an amazing follow-up.
Personally, I thought he did quite well with The Avengers, which makes me excited that he’s returning to direct the sequel, but you may recall that his work will not end there.
He will also be helping out with a new TV series set in The Avengers universe, as well as helping to “contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe,” so we may well see him helping out with the Thor and Captain America sequels, or even Guardians of the Galaxy.
It will be quite interesting to see how these next few years of Marvel films play out, especially with someone as talented as Whedon lurking behind the scenes.
Again, you can catch The Avengers 2 when it arrives in theaters on May 1, 2015.
